The City of Matlosana kicked off the Matlosana Entrepreneurial Flea Market Day on Friday, 03 October 2025, at the Klerksdorp Civic Centre, marking the start of a weekend dedicated to celebrating local entrepreneurship, innovation, and community spirit. Organised by the Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate, the event provides a vibrant platform for emerging entrepreneurs, crafters, and food vendors to display and sell their products while connecting with customers and business partners.

A Platform for Local Growth
The flea market forms part of Matlosana’s broader economic empowerment strategy, designed to stimulate small business growth and reduce unemployment through accessible trading opportunities. Stalls lined the Civic Centre grounds, featuring an array of locally made crafts, fashion, beauty products, and traditional food stalls, showcasing the creativity and resilience of the region’s small business community.
The event drew in entrepreneurs from across Klerksdorp, Jouberton, and Orkney, many of whom expressed appreciation for the municipality’s commitment to promoting inclusive economic participation.
Leadership and Vision
Delivering his keynote address, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development, Cllr Wesley Kgang, emphasised the city’s mission to empower small and micro-enterprises as a foundation for sustainable local growth.
He further highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, business, and community stakeholders in creating a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Building Capacity Beyond the Market
The flea market is not a standalone event but part of a larger economic development framework under the City’s LED initiatives.
In addition to the exhibition and sales opportunities, the program incorporates:
Business Skills Workshops – helping entrepreneurs develop marketing, finance, and management skills.
Mentorship Partnerships – connecting experienced business owners with start-ups for guidance and growth.
Networking Sessions – encouraging partnerships among traders, suppliers, and local investors.
These interventions aim to provide small businesses with the tools and knowledge to sustain long-term success beyond single events.
Empowering Through Inclusion
Cllr Kgang reaffirmed that the municipality’s LED strategy prioritises inclusivity, ensuring that women, youth, and people from marginalised communities have equal access to business opportunities. He praised the growing number of young entrepreneurs who are embracing innovation to overcome economic challenges.

Day 2 and Community Support
The Matlosana Entrepreneurial Flea Market Day continues on Saturday, 04 October 2025, promising another day of energetic trading and community engagement. Residents are encouraged to visit, support local traders, and experience the diversity of homegrown products that reflect the creativity and entrepreneurial drive of Matlosana’s people.
The event underscores the city’s growing role as a hub for small business development and its commitment to building a resilient, inclusive economy that works for all.
Wrap-Up
Through initiatives like the flea market, the City of Matlosana continues to demonstrate that empowering entrepreneurs is key to sustainable development. By supporting local talent and providing platforms for small business exposure, the municipality is not only strengthening the local economy but also inspiring a culture of innovation, self-reliance, and opportunity.
