The Matlosana National Fresh Produce Market, operating under the City of Matlosana’s Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate, hosted a celebration of National Potato Day in partnership with the Vuselela TVET Taung College Culinary Faculty and local chefs.

Highlighting the Value of Potatoes
The event was held under the theme “Shaping History, Nourishing the Future” and focused on the vital role of potatoes in food security, economic development, and culinary culture. Potatoes were recognised not only as a staple food source but also for their contribution to nutrition, affordability, and versatility in cooking.
National Potato Day also draws attention to the crop’s importance across farming systems, ranging from smallholder farmers to large-scale commercial producers, making it a cornerstone of both local and global food supply chains.

Partnerships and Practical Learning
As part of the celebration, students and faculty from Vuselela TVET Taung College collaborated with the market to showcase innovative potato-based dishes and highlight culinary diversity. The event provided an opportunity for learners to gain practical experience while engaging directly with the public and industry partners.
The Local Economic Development Directorate underscored the importance of collaboration between educational institutions, local chefs, and the fresh produce market in creating opportunities that benefit both the economy and the community.

Economic and Social Significance
Potatoes remain one of the most affordable, high-yielding crops in South Africa, playing a crucial role in sustaining households and supporting agricultural businesses. The celebration highlighted the crop’s contribution to economic growth and encouraged greater appreciation of its role in ensuring food security.
