The City of Matlosana’s Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate is set to host a Gastronomy Tourism Event on 20 March 2026. This initiative forms part of the municipality’s broader strategy to position the region as a hub for cultural and culinary excellence. By highlighting indigenous flavors and traditional cooking methods, the city aims to stimulate the local hospitality sector and promote social cohesion through shared heritage.
The event follows a series of public engagements led by the LED department, including a recent radio broadcast on Star FM 102.9MHz. On 10 March 2026, MMC for LED, Cllr Wesley Kgang, joined host Rets’elisitsoe Temeki to discuss the importance of gastronomy in driving tourism. The discussion emphasized how local food serves as a bridge between Matlosana’s diverse history and its economic future, encouraging residents to take pride in their culinary traditions.

Culinary Heritage at Goudkoppie Hill
The chosen venue, Goudkoppie Heritage Hill, holds significant historical value for the region. As a provincial heritage site, it contains remnants of Iron Age settlements, Boer War blockhouses, and early 19th-century gold mining activity. The event's theme, "Exploring the City’s Culture, Heritage, and Traditions Through Food," seeks to revitalize interest in this landmark while providing a platform for local vendors and chefs.
Attendees can expect a comprehensive cultural experience, including:
Traditional Food Tasting: A showcase of local dishes, including indigenous delicacies such as amanqina (chicken feet) and traditional stews.
Performance Arts: Live poetry sessions and traditional dance performances designed to narrate the story of the North West's people.
Cultural Dress: Guests are encouraged to attend in traditional attire to further celebrate the aesthetic diversity of the community.
Economic and Strategic Objectives
Beyond the festivities, the municipality views gastronomy tourism as a critical tool for Local Economic Development. By drawing visitors to heritage sites and promoting local food businesses, the city intends to diversify its economy, which has historically been reliant on the mining sector. This event is part of a larger calendar of activities, including the annual Hello Festival and various agricultural shows, aimed at making Matlosana a year-round destination.
Leadership within the LED Directorate has noted that these "lifestyle" events create immediate opportunities for small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs). The gathering at Goudkoppie Hill is expected to foster networking between hospitality stakeholders and provide a much-needed boost to the local informal economy.
As the city prepares for the March 20th gathering, officials continue to urge residents to support local initiatives that celebrate the "City of People on the Move." The Gastronomy Tourism Event represents a step toward reclaiming public spaces for community use and ensuring that Matlosana's rich history remains a living part of its modern identity.
