As the 2026 Easter long weekend drew to a close, the City of Matlosana Local Municipality reported a successful period of heightened service delivery and community support. Despite the significant pressure placed on municipal infrastructure by a high volume of religious gatherings, sporting events, and social ceremonies, various departments operated on a 24-hour cycle to maintain the city's standards of safety and cleanliness.

The Executive Mayor, Cllr Fikile Mahlophe, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Community Services, Water, Sewer, and Traffic Departments. These teams were tasked with managing an influx of requests from residents and organizations hosting funerals, weddings, and church conventions. The municipal response was characterized by late-night operations to ensure that all logged service calls were addressed effectively.
Focus on Parks, Sports, and Infrastructure
A primary focus for the municipality during this period was the upkeep of public spaces and the N12 corridor. The Community Services team undertook several key initiatives:
Illegal Dumping: Dedicated crews were deployed to clear refuse and illegal dumping sites across the city.
Cemetery Maintenance: Grass cutting and landscaping were prioritized at local cemeteries to accommodate visitors.
Sporting Facilities: The Sports Department, under the management of Dr. Sanet Owencamp, was noted for its responsiveness. Last-minute maintenance at the Matlosana, Manzilpark, and Alabama Stadiums allowed these venues to successfully host scheduled weekend activities.
The municipality indicated that these efforts were an extension of the ongoing "Love Your Street" campaign, which aims to foster civic pride and improve the urban environment. As the holiday concluded, the Mayor issued a final appeal to travelers to observe traffic regulations and ensure a safe return to their destinations.

Technical Teams Respond to Flooded Pump Station in Matlosana
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has issued an urgent notice regarding a significant water supply interruption affecting several major residential sectors. The disruption began on Tuesday, 7 April 2026, following a mechanical failure at the Ellaton pump system, which serves a large portion of the region's western suburbs and surrounding towns.
According to the municipal technical report, a flooded pump station caused the primary pumps to trip, effectively halting the distribution of water to the network. This incident has left thousands of residents without access to piped water as the municipality works to address the underlying cause and repair the damaged infrastructure.
Areas Affected and Restoration Timeline
The interruption is widespread, impacting both urban townships and outlying areas. The following locations are confirmed to be without water:
Jouberton
Alabama
Hartebeesfontein
Tigane
Surrounding Ellaton-fed areas
Municipal technical teams remain on-site, performing remedial actions to drain the facility and restart the pumps. Officials have confirmed that the affected areas will remain without water for the duration of the night. Restoration of the water supply is currently projected for Wednesday, 8 April 2026, provided that the technical repairs proceed without further complications. The municipality has expressed its regret for the inconvenience caused to residents during this period.

Through both festive celebrations and technical challenges, the City of Matlosana continues to navigate the complexities of municipal management. While the Easter weekend demonstrated the capacity of the workforce to manage high-pressure events, the current water crisis highlights the ongoing vulnerability of local infrastructure to environmental and technical failures.
