The City of Matlosana undertook an urgent response operation in Orkney on Thursday, 30 October 2025, following community reports of ongoing sewer spillages affecting residential and business areas. The visit formed part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure maintenance and ensure service delivery efficiency across the region.

Site Inspection and Maintenance Work

The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development, Cllr Wesley Kgang, visited the affected areas, accompanied by Mr. Nelson Mongale, Director of Technical and Infrastructure, and Mr. Keaobaka Boikanyo, Director of Public Safety. The team monitored progress and assisted in coordinating the unblocking of sewer lines by municipal utility workers.

The maintenance activity aimed to clear obstructions in the sewer system, restore normal flow, and minimize potential environmental and health risks. According to municipal representatives, the operation was initiated after residents raised concerns about the scale of the spillage and its possible impact on surrounding properties and businesses.

Community Alerts and Municipal Response

Cllr Kgang noted that the municipality had been alerted by residents regarding the urgency of the situation, which prompted immediate coordination between relevant departments. He acknowledged the role of the community in reporting the issue and emphasised the importance of early intervention to prevent further complications.

The incident highlights the municipality’s reliance on community feedback as part of its broader service delivery strategy. Residents’ reports allowed officials to address the situation before it escalated into a larger public health or environmental problem.

Encouraging Reporting and Collaboration

Residents have been encouraged to continue using official municipal channels, including the call center and community liaison offices, to report service-related emergencies such as sewer blockages, water leaks, and infrastructure faults.

Municipal management indicated that timely reporting enables faster response times and helps ensure that maintenance teams can prioritize critical areas effectively.
