The City of Matlosana is undergoing a significant transformation as municipal leadership executes a multi-pronged strategy to enhance civic pride, public safety, and residential security. By aligning local initiatives with national priorities, the municipality is addressing the immediate needs of the community while laying the groundwork for long-term urban sustainability. This comprehensive approach focuses on revitalizing public spaces, equipping the youth with life-saving skills, and fast-tracking land ownership to foster a resilient and "moving" city.

Environmental Stewardship and the "Love Your Street" Campaign
On Wednesday, 7 January 2026, the City of Matlosana launched a high-profile "Love Your Street" clean-up campaign in Klerksdorp, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to urban decay. The initiative saw a powerful collaboration between local government, led by Executive Mayor Councillor Fikile Mahlophe and MMC Cllr Kgosietsile Seitshiro, and the national executive, represented by the Minister in the Presidency, Honourable Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.
The team focused on critical transit hubs and commercial zones, including the N12 corridor, the Klerksdorp taxi rank, and Anderson Street in the CBD. Beyond the physical removal of waste to fill municipal trucks, the campaign served as a platform for public engagement. Leaders met with street vendors, taxi operators, and shop owners to encourage a culture of shared responsibility, emphasizing that a clean city is a prerequisite for a thriving local economy and a healthy environment.

Enhancing Community Safety Through Aquatic Literacy
Parallel to urban cleaning efforts, the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture successfully implemented a Learn-to-Swim and Water Safety Programme during the 2025/2026 festive season. This initiative directly addressed the high risk of water-related incidents during the summer holidays, reaching approximately 800 participants from various wards. The programme provided structured training in basic swimming techniques, floating, and, crucially, drowning prevention and emergency response.
The municipality has confirmed that this life-saving intervention will continue through March 2026. The next phase involves rolling out the programme across all local municipal swimming pools to ensure broader community access. By prioritizing water safety education, Matlosana is not only promoting healthy lifestyles but also fulfilling its commitment to youth development and preventative community safety measures in line with national objectives.

Milestones in Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development
The Directorate of Planning and Human Settlements has reported landmark achievements for the 2025 period, fundamentally changing the residential landscape of the municipality. The completion of major projects in Sunnyside, Tigane, Alabama, and Kanana resulted in the creation of 5,146 erven. Furthermore, the city successfully issued 1,634 title deeds, with the highest distributions occurring in Jouberton (789) and Alabama (319), providing residents with the legal and economic security of formal property ownership.
Looking toward the remainder of 2026, the directorate is managing an even more ambitious pipeline. Five major township establishments are currently in progress, including Khuma Extension 12 and the Waterfall project, which are projected to yield a combined 11,541 erven. With 4,665 stands already serviced and over 400 building plans approved, the municipality is rapidly expanding its capacity to provide dignified housing and commercial opportunities for its growing population.
The convergence of these initiatives, cleaner streets, safer recreation, and expanded housing, marks a pivotal era for Matlosana. By balancing immediate service delivery with long-term infrastructure planning, the municipality is successfully fostering a sense of ownership among its residents. As these programmes evolve throughout 2026, the City of Matlosana continues to solidify its reputation as a proactive and people-centered local government.
