Matlosana Shines in Hosting Successful North West N12 Ultra Marathon

The City of Matlosana proudly celebrated another milestone in regional sports excellence with the successful hosting of the North West N12 Ultra Marathon, held on Saturday, 04 October 2025, at the Klerksdorp Recreation Centre. The event drew hundreds of runners and spectators from across South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho, cementing Matlosana’s reputation as a growing hub for sports tourism and community engagement.

Leadership and Community Unity
The event commenced with an official welcome by Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr Wesley Kgang, who applauded athletes and participants for their commitment and spirit. In his remarks, the Mayor emphasised the dual value of the marathon, both as a health-driven initiative and as a strategic contributor to the local economy.
He further noted that events of this magnitude strengthen social cohesion, attract visitors, and open doors for investment in Matlosana’s hospitality and recreation sectors.
Provincial Partnership and Support
The marathon was honoured by the attendance of the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Hon. Oageng Saliva Molapisi, who commended the city for its coordination and community involvement.
In his message of support, MEC Molapisi emphasised the importance of collaboration across government departments and private stakeholders to promote wellness and active citizenship through sport.
The Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation (ACSR) served as the main sponsor of the 2025 event, reaffirming its commitment to sports development, community wellness, and the nurturing of athletic talent within the North West Province.

A Celebration of Talent and Determination
This year’s marathon featured two major categories, a 21 km race and a 5 km fun run, each attracting enthusiastic participation from both seasoned athletes and community runners. The event was marked by high energy, teamwork, and the unmistakable sense of pride that comes with regional achievement.

Men’s Race: Mr. Nkoka Lebenya (Kingdom of Lesotho) – 1st Place
Women’s Race: Ms. Kebogile Motshabi (Pan African Resources) – 1st Place
🏅 5 km Winners:
Men’s Race: Mr. Keano Domingo (North West University) – 1st Place
Women’s Race: Ms. Liandri Kriel (Boxer Supermarket) – 1st Place
The City extended heartfelt congratulations to all winners and participants for their perseverance and sportsmanship, noting that every runner contributed to the success and spirit of the event.

The marathon also served as a major economic booster for Matlosana, with local vendors, hospitality establishments, and transport services benefiting from the influx of visitors.
