Public safety and municipal compliance took center stage this past Friday, February 6, 2026, as the City of Matlosana Local Municipality launched a dual-pronged service delivery initiative. The day’s activities were split between high-visibility traffic enforcement along the N12 and localized infrastructure and compliance inspections in Jouberton as part of the ongoing Thuntsha Lerole programme.

Traffic Law Enforcement on the N12
The City of Matlosana’s Public Safety Directorate conducted a major roadblock operation along the N12 in Klerksdorp to improve road safety and revenue collection. Traffic officials focused on several key areas of compliance, including:
Vehicle Roadworthiness: Assessing the physical condition of vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards.
Licensing Verification: Checking the validity of driver’s licenses and vehicle discs.
Legal Compliance: Scanning for outstanding traffic fines and active warrants of arrest.
While the municipality acknowledged that the operations caused some travel delays, officials emphasized that these roadblocks are necessary to reduce accidents and ensure motorist accountability. Similar operations are expected to continue across the broader Matlosana municipal area in the coming weeks.

Thuntsha Lerole Phase 5: Focus on Jouberton
Simultaneously, the municipality collaborated with the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality to roll out Phase 5 of the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery programme in Jouberton. This phase focuses on grassroots compliance and infrastructure maintenance to immediately improve residents' quality of life.
Key interventions on Friday included:
Tuck Shop Inspections: In Ward 12 (Extension 17), officials from Disaster Management and Health departments inspected local businesses for adherence to safety, hygiene, and licensing regulations.
Road Infrastructure: Monitoring teams from the Infrastructure department were deployed to Extension 24 to oversee ongoing road repair and pothole-fixing projects.
Inter-Governmental Collaboration: The initiative saw active participation from various stakeholders, including SASSA, SAPS, Home Affairs, and the local LED departments.
The day concluded with a feedback session led by Acting Executive Mayor of Matlosana, Cllr. Wesley Kgang, and Acting Executive Mayor of Dr KK District, Cllr. Zanele Mphafudi. Alongside MMC for Planning and Human Settlements, Cllr. Portia Mtshawulana, the leadership reviewed the day’s progress, affirming that the "Thuntsha Lerole" (meaning "shaking off the dust") initiative remains a vital tool for tackling service delivery backlogs directly within the community.
Final Thought
The simultaneous execution of traffic law enforcement and the Thuntsha Lerole programme reflects a coordinated effort by local government to address both public safety and basic service needs. By combining regulatory inspections with physical infrastructure repairs, the City of Matlosana and Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District are working to restore public confidence through visible, on-the-ground action. Residents are encouraged to remain compliant with municipal bylaws as these "accelerated" operations continue into the next phase.
