On Tuesday, 5 August 2025, the Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana, Councillor Fikile Mahlophe, conducted an oversight inspection at the Klerksdorp Library. The visit followed a four-month closure of the facility, during which extensive repairs and upgrades were carried out. The inspection aimed to assess the progress made and ensure that outstanding issues were being addressed in a timely and effective manner.
Major Maintenance Undertaken at Key Provincial Library
The Klerksdorp Library, recognised as one of the largest in the North West Province and the central library in Matlosana, underwent a series of much-needed repairs. These included a full upgrade of the plumbing system, with the replacement of old pipes and the restoration of toilet facilities. However, a low water pressure issue remains, prompting Mayor Mahlophe to directly contact the Technical Services Directorate for urgent intervention.
Roofing repairs were also carried out, with 50% of the planned improvements already completed. The remaining work is scheduled for the upcoming financial year. Faulty lighting within the library was another concern raised during the walkthrough. The Mayor immediately contacted the Electrical Department to begin repairs, including fixing the lights within the roof dome area.
In the children’s section, preparations are underway to replace the existing carpets with rubber flooring more suitable for young users, enhancing safety and comfort.
Technology and Resources Still Lagging
While the physical upgrades were noted, the Mayor expressed concern over the non-functional WiFi, which currently leaves library users without internet access. He contacted the municipal IT Department on the spot to prioritise the matter.
During his interaction with library staff, several operational challenges were brought to light, including the lack of tools of trade and insufficient resource allocations. The Mayor instructed the Director of Community Services to attend to these issues without delay, underscoring the need for well-equipped personnel in delivering quality public services.
Commitment to Safe, Inclusive Library Spaces
Throughout the oversight visit, Mayor Mahlophe emphasised the importance of providing a safe, peaceful, and accessible environment for all library users, particularly students and members of the public who rely on the facility for study, research, and digital access.
He expressed satisfaction with the maintenance already completed and urged that the outstanding work be concluded as quickly as possible to restore full functionality to the library.
Final Thought
The oversight inspection of the Klerksdorp Library by Mayor Mahlophe reflects a continued commitment to service delivery, infrastructure improvement, and community engagement within the City of Matlosana. As the library full reopens, the focus now shifts to ensuring that unresolved challenges are promptly addressed to restore this vital public institution to its full operational capacity.
