Merafong City Local Municipality marked Arbor Day 2025 alongside Heritage Day, blending environmental action with cultural celebration. The event highlighted the importance of tree planting not only as an ecological initiative but also as a reflection of African heritage and unity.

Arbor Day and Heritage Celebration
The program, attended by the MMC for Integrated Environmental Management Cllr. Nozo Segakweng, representatives from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD), Blybank residents, and community stakeholders, saw the planting of trees as symbols of growth, resilience, and sustainability. Participants emphasized the value of creating a greener, healthier city while also honoring the cultural traditions that link people to the environment.

Refuting Social Media Allegations
In a separate media statement, the municipality addressed and rejected claims circulating on social media suggesting that Merafong City was blocking Harmony Gold Mine from supporting Wedela Technical High School. The municipality clarified that it enjoys a strong working relationship with Harmony Gold, one of its key development partners, and confirmed that no such obstruction exists.
Officials stressed that all corporate social investments made by Harmony Gold or other companies are welcomed, provided they align with community development needs and applicable regulations. The municipality further called on residents and stakeholders to verify facts through official communication channels and to avoid spreading misinformation that may cause unnecessary division or mislead the public.

Commitment to Community Development
Merafong City reaffirmed its dedication to environmental sustainability through initiatives like Arbor Day celebrations and to transparency and accountability through official statements addressing public concerns. The municipality highlighted its ongoing partnership with stakeholders and the private sector to improve the quality of life for residents and strengthen long-term community development.

Final Note
By combining cultural celebration with environmental stewardship and addressing community concerns directly, Merafong City demonstrated a commitment to both honoring tradition and building resilience. These efforts reflect a broader vision of sustainability, accountability, and unity, positioning the municipality as an active partner in shaping a greener and more inclusive future.
