From Humble Beginnings to Growth

What began as a smaller community event featuring only football and netball has now expanded into a much broader initiative. For the first time, volleyball and chess will be included in the line-up, offering new opportunities for participation and ensuring that the Games cater to a wider range of interests and abilities.

The inclusion of volleyball strengthens team sport representation, while chess brings a new dimension of mental strategy and youth engagement, highlighting the Games’ commitment to balancing both physical and cognitive sporting codes.

A Community-Centred Initiative

At the launch, speakers emphasized the importance of sport as a tool for community building. The Games are not just about competition but also about promoting healthy lifestyles, social unity, and inclusivity. Both affiliated and non-affiliated participants are encouraged to register, ensuring that the programme remains open to all who wish to contribute to its success.

The Mayoral Games have become an annual highlight in Merafong City, fostering community pride while identifying new sporting talent. The initiative aligns with the city’s broader Vision 2035, which places emphasis on youth empowerment, active citizenship, and sustainable community development.
