The Merafong Local Municipality has issued an urgent public notice regarding ongoing water supply challenges affecting the region. These disruptions are primarily attributed to reduced bulk water supply from Rand Water and an intense ongoing heatwave, which has driven water consumption to exceptionally high levels across Gauteng Province.

Current Status by Region (as of 10 February 2026)
The municipality reports varying levels of impact across different sectors, with some areas facing a total loss of supply while others remain stable for now.
Carletonville & Khutsong:
Reservoir Levels: Blybank is currently at 0%, Carletonville East at 20%, and Adata at 30%.
Areas Without Water: Impacted locations include Khutsong North, Chawela, New Mandela, and the Skydiving Area.
High-Lying Areas: Residents in Khutsong Ext 5 and Khutsong South are also without water.
Low Pressure: Carletonville East, Kareiga Street, Tugela Street, and the 007 high-lying areas are experiencing significant pressure drops.
Fochville:
Critical Inflow: Inflow from Rand Water is at a critically low 1.2 bar, posing a high risk to storage systems.
Reservoir Levels: One 5 ML reservoir is at 0%, while the 12 ML reservoir is at 30%.
Affected Areas: High-lying portions of Extensions 1, 4, 5, 6, and 99 are experiencing low to no water.
Wedela:
Status: Water supply in Wedela remains currently adequate.
Reservoir Levels: Both the 10 ML and 2.5 ML reservoirs are holding at 80% capacity.

Mandatory Restrictions and Prohibited Activities
To prevent a total system collapse, residents are urged to comply with 40% water restrictions as Rand Water faces critical conditions.
The following activities are strictly prohibited until further notice:
Irrigation of gardens and lawns.
Washing of vehicles using hosepipes.
Cleaning of pavements and driveways.
Moving Toward Stability
Municipal Manager Mr. Dumisani D. Mabuza has confirmed that the local government is working closely with Rand Water and the Gauteng Provincial Government to restore a stable supply. While teams monitor the situation, further updates will be communicated as the coordinated provincial response develops. Residents are reminded that water must be used sparingly and responsibly to protect essential supplies for the entire community.
