The Merafong City Local Municipality issued a Road Closure Notice on December 8, 2025, informing residents and road users that a section of the R500 road has been temporarily closed following the formation of a large sinkhole. The collapse, which worsened recently, created a significant hazard in Carletonville that requires immediate intervention.

Immediate Action and Detour
The sinkhole formation was exacerbated by recent heavy rainfall. In response, a detour route has been created to safely redirect traffic around the affected area.
Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution when approaching the R500, particularly around 400 metres from Red Cap, where the diversion route begins. Traffic officials have placed clear signage and barricades to guide vehicles through the temporary route. Where possible, motorists are advised to avoid the road completely.

Call for Public Vigilance
The Municipality urged road users to adhere to several safety measures:
Avoid the affected section where possible and follow the official detour route.
Reduce speed and remain vigilant near the sinkhole area and along the diversion.
Report any new cracks, subsidence, or visible ground movement to the municipal call centre on +27 82 516 0794.
Monitoring and Reopening
The Municipality is closely monitoring the sinkhole and surrounding infrastructure to prevent further damage. The road will remain closed until engineers confirm that it is structurally safe to reopen.
The notice was issued by the Merafong City Local Municipality Spokesperson, Mr Thabo Moloja.

Prioritising Public Safety
The immediate closure of the R500 demonstrates the Merafong City Local Municipality's commitment to prioritising public safety in the face of sudden geological hazards. While the closure causes temporary disruption, the proactive detour and strict monitoring ensure that the risk of accident is mitigated, allowing time for expert assessment and permanent repairs to the critical infrastructure.
