Overloaded Grid Triggers Transformer Overhaul in Jouberton

The municipal electrical grid faced significant strain at the start of the week. On Monday, June 15, 2026, the Electrical Department confirmed that a transformer had blasted in Jouberton Extension 11 during the morning hours, resulting in subsequent blackouts across both Extension 10 and Extension 11.

According to municipal authorities, the root cause of the failure was severe overloading on electrical breakers and transformers, driven by unusually high winter power demands during cold weather conditions. In response, the City issued an advisory to residents in Alabama, Jouberton, and Manzilpark, requesting temporary energy conservation during peak hours from 05:00 to 08:00 and 17:00 to 20:30.

The municipality highlighted several practices compounding grid stress, including:

  • Excessive usage of geysers.

  • Leaving lights and plugs powered on unnecessarily for prolonged durations.

  • Utilizing electric cooking stoves as alternative space heaters.

  • Incidents of electricity theft and illegal bridging of infrastructure cables.

Repair crews were dispatched to the site to safely replace or repair the damaged infrastructure.
