The Merafong City Local Municipality has issued a response to recent media reports alleging severe water shortages at Carletonville Hospital. The Municipality expressed concern over the claims, emphasizing that the hospital remains fully operational with essential services unaffected despite reduced water pressure.

Media Coverage and Clarification
According to the Municipality, a recent Sunday Times article suggested that Carletonville Hospital faced critical shortages, a claim they say did not reflect the full situation. Officials noted that the publication did not seek their right of reply, resulting in what they regard as an unbalanced account.
The Municipality explained that the hospital, along with other healthcare facilities in the area, continues to receive water at a reduced pressure due to a 40% restriction imposed by Rand Water. Despite this, the hospital has backup water systems in place, including water dispensers and bottled water, ensuring patient care is not compromised.

Hospital Management’s Position
The CEO of Carletonville Hospital confirmed that the facility has sufficient backup measures to maintain operations. They noted that all wards have safe drinking water and backup supplies. The hospital stressed that claims of an entire ward being left without water were not accurate or sensible, and reiterated their ongoing collaboration with the Municipality to secure long-term solutions.

Municipal Measures and Commitment
To mitigate the impact of Rand Water restrictions, the Municipality has deployed water tankers to high-lying and critical areas. Technical teams remain in close contact with hospital management to monitor supply levels and respond to urgent needs.
The Municipality assured residents and stakeholders that healthcare facilities remain functional and that patient care continues without compromise. Efforts are ongoing with Rand Water and provincial authorities to restore normal supply levels and stabilize pressure across affected areas.
Officials concluded by reaffirming their commitment to transparent communication and pledged to keep the public updated on progress in addressing the water challenges.
