The N12 highway, a vital artery connecting the North West province, has been forced into an emergency closure following a major water pipeline burst and the detection of renewed geotechnical instability. On Monday, April 20, 2026, a high-pressure bulk line managed by Midvaal Water ruptured near Stilfontein, creating a high-risk environment for motorists and prompting an immediate response from provincial and local authorities.

Pipeline Status and Technical Intervention
As of today, April 21, 2026, the City of Matlosana Local Municipality reports that Midvaal Water has successfully isolated the burst and halted the flow of water. While the immediate flooding has subsided, the municipality’s electrical and water departments remain on-site to address secondary infrastructure damage.
The primary concern now shifts to the structural integrity of the road surface along the Potchefstroom to Klerksdorp route. Geotechnical experts are arriving on-site today to assess whether the high-pressure water infiltration has triggered further subsidence in the area's sensitive soil.
Geological Hazards and Road Safety
The closure is compounded by a "developing geotechnical hazard" identified by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL). The N12 corridor near Stilfontein is notorious for its dolomitic geology, where water leaks can rapidly lead to the formation of sinkholes.
Following the 2024 reopening of a section previously destroyed by a 30-metre-wide sinkhole, SANRAL has confirmed that fresh ground instability is being monitored. The current closure is a preventative measure to ensure that the heavy volume of traffic moving between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp does not trigger a catastrophic collapse.
Traffic Management and Diversions
Traffic officials have implemented a full diversion to bypass the affected area and maintain the flow of goods and commuters:
Direction: Potchefstroom towards Klerksdorp.
Detour: All vehicles are being diverted off the N12 and through the town of Stilfontein.
Safety Warning: Motorists are strictly cautioned not to ignore road closure signs. The visible sagging of the asphalt suggests that the ground beneath the surface may already be hollowed out, posing a lethal risk to heavy vehicles.
SANRAL and municipal engineers are expected to release a joint statement once the geotechnical assessment is completed, which will determine the duration of the closure for this essential transit route.
