Commuters and motorists in the City of Matlosana have seen a return to regular service, following the official termination of yesterday’s widespread taxi shutdown. Major transport arteries, including the N12, R30, and R503, have been cleared of debris and blockades, allowing for the free flow of traffic into the Klerksdorp CBD and surrounding townships.

Resolution and Restoration of Services
The restoration follows a successful high-level engagement held late yesterday between the Executive Mayor, Cllr Fikile Mahlophe, local taxi industry leaders, and provincial transport officials. All parties reached a formal agreement to address the systemic issues that sparked the protest, which had left the region at a virtual standstill for nearly 24 hours.
The following status has been reported:
Taxi Ranks: All major ranks in Jouberton, Alabama, and the Klerksdorp CBD are fully operational.
Road Conditions: Municipal teams worked through the night to clear remnants of burning tires and stones from the N12 and internal routes.
Schools and Businesses: Educational institutions and local businesses have reopened their doors, with skeleton crews from yesterday being replaced by full staffing as transport became available.
Immediate Enforcement Actions
In line with the agreement reached yesterday, a coordinated clampdown on illegal 7-seater vehicles (pirate taxis) has commenced today across the KOSH (Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein, and Hartbeesfontein) area. Municipal and provincial traffic departments, supported by SAPS, are conducting roadblocks to verify operating licenses and permits.
Long-term Commitments
The Office of the Executive Mayor has reiterated its commitment to:
April Action Plan: A structured program starting next week to clear the backlog of provincial operating licenses.
Infrastructure Security: Law enforcement has been tasked with protecting road construction sites from extortionists who have previously delayed essential maintenance.
Road Rehabilitation: The municipality has pledged to accelerate its current road repair program to prevent further damage to public transport vehicles.
Final Advisory
While the situation has stabilized, the public is advised that a visible security presence remains at key intersections to monitor the transition. The Office of the Executive Mayor has extended a sincere apology to all residents for the disruptions and has thanked the community for their patience during the negotiations.
