The North-West University (NWU) has solidified its reputation as a global powerhouse for dual-career athletes following standout performances at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland. Representing South Africa on the international stage, student-athletes Luan Munnik and Franco Le Roux both secured seventh-place finishes in their respective finals, marking a historic chapter for the university’s high-performance sports program.

Munnik Shatters Personal Best in 3000m Final
In a display of tactical endurance, Luan Munnik delivered a career-defining performance in the men’s 3,000-meter final. Competing against a world-class field, Munnik crossed the finish line in 7:37.94, securing 7th place globally.
The time represents a massive personal best for the distance runner, signaling his ascent into the elite ranks of international middle-distance running. Munnik is currently balancing his rigorous training schedule with his second year of a part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Management. He is coached by Jean Verster, the Senior Manager of the NWU High Performance Institute (HPI), who has been instrumental in navigating Munnik’s transition from collegiate success to the world championships.

Le Roux Claims African Record in Hurdles Milestone
The championships also bore witness to a "passing of the torch" moment in the 60m hurdles. Franco Le Roux surged through the semi-finals with a blistering time of 7.50 seconds, setting a new African Indoor Record.
The feat was particularly poignant as Le Roux broke the previous record held by his own mentor, NWU sprinting coach Shaun Bownes. Le Roux maintained his momentum into the final, where he finished 7th in the world. While rewriting the record books, Le Roux remains dedicated to his academic pursuits, currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce focusing on Economic Sciences, Agricultural Economics, and Risk Management.

A Global Benchmark for Student-Athletes
The success of Munnik and Le Roux underscores the effectiveness of the NWU athletic pipeline, which emphasizes the synergy between high-performance training and academic rigour. By placing two athletes in the top ten of their respective disciplines at a World Championship, the institution continues to demonstrate its ability to produce competitors capable of challenging the world’s best while maintaining a focus on professional development outside of sport.
