A Confident Start
Under the floodlights of the NWU Mahikeng Stadium, the Eagles took control of their Varsity Football Round 5 clash against TUT. From the first whistle, NWU signaled their intent, dominating possession and setting the tempo with crisp passing and patient build-up play. For long spells of the opening half, TUT were pinned in their own half, struggling to settle on the ball.

By the 30-minute mark, NWU had enjoyed nearly 70% possession and produced several shots on target, while TUT were yet to test goalkeeper Ethan Mokwena. The Eagles’ midfield trio dictated the rhythm, keeping the visitors chasing shadows and forcing them into defensive mode.
TUT’s Counterattacking Response
TUT’s approach was built around transitions, hoping to catch NWU on the break. While this gave them occasional opportunities to push forward, their lack of precision in the final third kept them from creating clear-cut chances. The NWU backline, marshalled by captain Aphelele Sibisi, showed discipline and composure, cutting out attacks before they became dangerous.
As halftime arrived, the scoreline remained goalless, but NWU’s dominance suggested that the breakthrough was coming.

The Decisive Goal
The second half saw NWU continue to press for an opener. Their patience was rewarded when a sharp passing move down the right opened space for striker Momelezi Mngati, who made no mistake with a clinical finish to put the Eagles 1–0 ahead.
The goal sent the Mahikeng crowd into raptures, as purple flags waved and chants filled the stadium. TUT, forced to chase the game, stepped up their intensity but found no way past a resilient NWU defence.

Standout Performances
While Mngati’s goal proved decisive, it was Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk who stole the spotlight. Nicknamed “Messi” by the fans for his flair and creativity, Van Schalkwyk’s tireless work earned him the
Player of the Match award. His ability to link play and stretch the TUT defence highlighted his growing influence in the Eagles’ campaign.

Looking Ahead
The 1–0 victory handed NWU three crucial points and reinforced their reputation as one of the most tactically disciplined sides in the competition. With growing momentum, the Eagles are finding the right balance between patient build-up, sharp finishing, and defensive solidity.
For TUT, the defeat exposed their struggles in the attacking third, where a lack of composure continues to cost them. As the tournament progresses, finding solutions in front of goal will be vital to stay competitive.
