As the oldest residence on NWU Potchefstroom Campus, Ratau Lebone Men’s Residence stands as a testament to rich tradition and enduring values. Established on September 13, 1940, under the leadership of Prof. PJ Van der Merwe, Ratau carries a legacy deeply rooted in camaraderie, excellence, and pride. Its name, derived from Prof. Van der Merwe’s Tswana nickname meaning “Father Lion,” reflects the strength and unity that define its residents.
The residence motto, “In the Light of the Father,” continues to inspire generations of Ratau men to achieve greatness together, hand in hand.
A Residence of Brotherhood
Ratau is more than just a place to stay, it’s a community built on shared values and mutual respect. Each corridor within the residence has a distinct identity, emphasizing unique qualities that contribute to the overall spirit of Ratau:
Heerengracht (Diversity):
Motto: "When we play, we play hard. When we work, we work just as hard but we never forget the value of play."
Pantera Leo (Brotherhood):
Motto: "Gentlemen."
Ambrosia (Leadership):
Motto: "Here we will guide you."
Nasau (Uniqueness):
Motto: "Study and pass, eat and become fat."
Keizergracht (Pride):
Motto: "I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they’d never expect it."
Pumaville (Success):
Motto: “Werk maak sterk.”
Each corridor fosters a culture that not only celebrates individual strengths but also contributes to the collective spirit of the residence.

Campus Theatre Achievements: Ratau placed 2nd in the Best Men's Theatre category, showcasing its residents’ creativity and talent.
