Lightning Start in Mahikeng
The NWU Eagles produced a commanding display at the Mahikeng Stadium to seal their spot in the Varsity Football semi-finals with a 3–0 victory over Wits. Backed by their home supporters, the Eagles wasted no time stamping their authority on the contest. Within just five minutes, Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk was perfectly placed to convert a low cross inside the penalty area, handing NWU a dream start and igniting celebrations in the stands.

Wits, despite conceding early, remained composed and tried to settle into their rhythm. They enjoyed spells of possession but were frustrated by NWU’s compact defensive line, which gave little away. By the 30-minute mark, NWU had already registered three shots on target and looked far sharper in attack.
Second Half: Eagles in Full Flight
After the halftime break, NWU raised the intensity further. The midfield trio took control, winning duels and recycling possession to keep Wits pinned in their own half. Their pressure was rewarded in the 51st minute when captain Aphelele Sibisi calmly slotted home the second goal after excellent link-up play with Van Schalkwyk.
With a 2–0 cushion, the Eagles controlled proceedings, maintaining their shape while denying Wits any clear scoring chances. The visitors were restricted to speculative long-range efforts that never troubled NWU goalkeeper Ethan Mokwena.

A Spectacular Finish
The highlight of the evening came in the 89th minute. Substitute Xolani Masethi spotted space outside the box and unleashed a thunderous long-range strike that flew past the Wits goalkeeper, sealing a comprehensive 3–0 victory and sparking jubilation among the home crowd.

Standout Performances
While the goal scorers grabbed headlines, it was defender Lucas Seromo who earned Player of the Match for his composure at the back and his ability to transition play into attack. Alongside captain Sibisi, Seromo anchored a defense that looked impenetrable on the night.
