The weekend starts proper for many South Africans when the alarm goes off on a Saturday morning, not for work, but for the local parkrun. For those in the Free State area, or just popping by, the Pont de Val parkrun offers a refreshing, free, and timed 5-kilometre event every week. This isn't about setting world records; it's about getting out there, moving the chassis, and sharing a jol with the community.
Same Time, Same Place, Every Week
Mark your calendars, or better yet, set your phone reminder for 08:00 every Saturday. Participants are encouraged to arrive from 07:30 to get their bearings and maybe catch up with friends before the start. The meeting point is conveniently located right at the START sign across from Frédéric’s Table Restaurant at the Pont de Val venue.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner trying to smash your personal best, a casual jogger, or someone who prefers a leisurely walk and a chat, the course is open to all. The best part? Entry is free.
Your Barcode is the Business
A crucial bit of admin, which seasoned parkrunners know, is the barcode. If you want a recorded time for your effort, you absolutely must remember your parkrun barcode. No barcode, no time,it’s the rule. If you haven't yet joined the global parkrun family, you can sign up on their website: parkrun.co.za/register. It only takes a few minutes, and you’re sorted for life.
Once you’ve crossed the finish line and caught your breath, the fun doesn’t stop. The Pont de Val venue offers excellent options for rewarding your exercise. You can grab a much-needed caffeine fix at Depresso Café or enjoy a full, delicious breakfast at Frédéric’s Table. It’s the perfect way to turn a 5 kilometre run into a proper morning outing.
