Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub concluded their involvement in the Philip van Rensburg Tournament and the Mervyn Taylor Shield this past weekend with two closely contested playoff matches that reflected the club’s steady progress and competitive potential.

While the First Team secured a well-deserved third-place finish, the Second Team delivered a spirited performance in the Shield final but narrowly missed out on a podium finish.
🏉 Results – 3 May 2025
Potch Dorp 2 30 – 37 Lichtenburg 1(Mervyn Taylor Shield – Final: Shield Runner-Up)
Potch Dorp 1 29 – 10 Impala(Philip van Rensburg Tournament – Third-Place Match: 3rd Place)
A Tournament That Showed More Than Just Scores
Despite not walking away with silverware, both squads demonstrated growth and resilience throughout the tournament phase.
The Second Team – affectionately dubbed the “Gilberts” by supporters, held their own against top, level first teams in the competition, including Lichtenburg. Their final match was a tightly fought encounter that remained competitive until the closing minutes, ultimately ending 30–37. The side may have finished as runners-up, but their performance in a higher-tier league raised eyebrows and earned respect.

The First Team rounded off their PVR campaign on a strong note with a composed 29–10 victory over Impala. The result marks an improvement on last year’s standings and serves as a clear indicator of the upward trajectory under current coaching and management.
Recognition Across the Club
Credit was widely shared among players, coaching staff, supporters, and club administrators, all of whom contributed to a positive and promising tournament run. With improved results and competitive performances against some of the top clubs in the region, Potch Dorp has positioned itself as a side to watch as the next phase of the season begins.
Next Chapter: League Rugby Kicks Off 10 May
Importantly, the end of the cup competitions does not signal the end of the season. Focus now shifts to league play, with Potch Dorp set to begin its campaign on Saturday, 10 May 2025. The groundwork laid during the tournaments provides both teams with valuable preparation and a springboard into the next challenge.
Final Take
Potch Dorp is no longer just competing, they’re contending. Expect them to carry that momentum straight into the league, with lessons learned, confidence earned, and pride intact.
