Floods, Rain and Vaal Sluices
Flooding Causes Severe Damage as Vaal Dam Opens 10 Gates
In late April 2025, communities along the Vaal River faced severe flooding after intense rains pushed the Vaal Dam beyond its capacity, prompting emergency releases through its sluice gates.
On April 25, water levels surged dramatically, peaking at over 118% of capacity. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) responded swiftly, progressively opening sluice gates throughout the day. By noon, officials had opened a ninth gate, releasing more than 1,100 cubic metres of water per second. A tenth gate followed shortly thereafter, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Engineers closely monitored the dam wall, and DWS assured the public that all necessary precautions were being taken to prevent overtopping or structural failure.
High Alert for Parys, Bloemhof, and Vaal Triangle
Downstream communities such as Parys, Bloemhof, and the broader Vaal Triangle remained on high alert. Residents near the riverbanks in Parys had already been evacuated as river levels rapidly rose. Authorities had established community shelters, urging anyone within the 100-year floodline to relocate immediately.
Roads between Potchefstroom and Parys and Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp, were severely impacted. Water pooled on road surfaces, causing hazardous conditions and partial road closures. Local authorities continuously updated residents, cautioning against travel unless absolutely necessary.
Disaster management teams advised residents to relocate livestock to higher ground, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the flooding. Communication lines stayed open, with frequent updates disseminated via local municipality channels.
Damage and Destruction in Parys
Despite these precautions, Parys experienced significant flooding damage. Homes along the riverbanks were inundated, and several businesses faced severe water damage. Infrastructure was hit particularly hard—bridges sustained structural impairments, and roads became impassable.
Local farmers also felt the brunt, losing livestock and dealing with extensive damage to irrigation systems. The impact was extensive, prompting emergency services to operate shelters for displaced residents.
Potchefstroom Grapples with Flood Impacts
Potchefstroom and nearby areas also suffered. A critical stretch between Potchefstroom and Parys flooded, forcing drivers to use alternate routes such as the "tronkpad" to reach their destinations safely. Conditions worsened northward, as the N12 highway between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp experienced severe flooding. Officials partially closed the highway, diverting vehicles due to deep water and debris.
The South African Weather Service had earlier issued a Level 2 disruptive rain warning, cautioning residents of further risks to roads, bridges, and settlements in the region.
Response and Ongoing Precautions
By early May, floodwaters had begun receding, allowing DWS to gradually close some sluice gates. Still, recovery efforts continued as communities assessed the damages. Emergency services and local municipalities maintained high alert levels, encouraging residents to remain cautious due to saturated grounds and possible future rainfall.
Residents were encouraged to stay vigilant, follow official channels for updates, and cooperate with local disaster management teams until the flooding threat fully subsided.

JB Marks and the Battle of Sewage
The JB Marks Concerned Citizens (JBMCC) group took decisive legal action demanding accountability and urgent responses from JB Marks Local Municipality and Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality following a troubling increase in sewage spillages across Potchefstroom.
A City in Crisis
Residents from various suburbs, including Promosa, Baillie Park, Central Town, Van der Hoff Park, and others, had been documenting severe sewage overflows that left homes unsanitary, public spaces polluted, and parts of the Mooi River and nearby wetlands dangerously contaminated. Major affected locations included:
Meadow Street
Kock Street
Jan Smuts Avenue
Parys Avenue
Abraham Street (Promosa)
Ben Pienaar Street
Drommedaris Street
Graphic evidence shared by residents depicted open sewage flowing onto streets and yards, causing unbearable odours and significant health risks.

Legal Intervention: Seeking Immediate Action
On behalf of JBMCC, Andreas Peens Attorneys issued a formal legal demand on 10 April 2025, highlighting the municipality's continued infringement of Section 24 of the Constitution, guaranteeing every citizen's right to a healthy environment. The communication criticized the persistent neglect by local authorities, referencing previous court findings related to service delivery failures in the Poortjie Dam case.
JBMCC presented a firm ultimatum:
Immediate clean-up and repair of sewage infrastructure by noon, 16 April 2025.
Provision of an official report outlining steps taken to address current issues and future spillages.
Non-compliance would prompt an urgent court application compelling municipal action.
Municipality Responds: Steps Towards Improvement
In a recent development, the JB Marks Local Municipality announced the installation of an additional pump, previously undergoing repairs, designed to significantly reduce sewage levels. This announcement came following direct communication between JB Marks Executive Mayor and local Ward Councillors.
Further addressing environmental concerns, authorities confirmed that rehabilitation efforts for wetland areas impacted by sewage spills would soon commence. This move aims to restore ecological balance and safeguard public health and local biodiversity.
Why This Matters
These steps represent critical progress in addressing a crisis that not only impacts public health but threatens significant environmental harm, particularly to the Mooi River and nearby wetlands. Such contamination poses severe risks, especially to ecosystems like the OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary.
Community Call to Action
JBMCC continues urging residents to document and report any sewage issues actively. The collective action and vigilant oversight of the community remain vital in ensuring sustained accountability and improvements in municipal service delivery.

Dienslewering vs Drome

Sentimentmeter: Hoe voel Potch regtig?
Op grond van die kommentare kan ons die gemeenskapsentiment so opsom:
😡 Negatief en gefrustreerd: ±70%
🤨 Skepties of vraende: ±15%
🌟 Positief en gemotiveerd om iets te doen: ±15%
Die meerderheid stem kla – en met goeie rede. Maar daar’s ook mense wat regtig glo hierdie kan ’n keerpunt wees.

The Saga Continues - Save Potch Request
Still Time to Act – Potchefstroom Needs You!
Recent actions from JB Marks Municipality, including installing a previously repaired sewage pump and planning wetland rehabilitation, offer hope—but our work isn't done. Now, more than ever, residents must show up and demand lasting solutions.

This is About Our Home – Not Politics
Potchefstroom has been pushed to the brink. Sewage spills have become commonplace, contaminating our parks, homes, and even the Mooi River. Families are still living amidst unbearable odours, blocked toilets, and unacceptable health risks.
Last week, legal action initiated by JB Marks Concerned Citizens (JBMCC) demanded urgent municipal intervention. Despite positive recent steps, it's critical to maintain momentum.
A Shocking Reality
Every year, R40 million intended for municipal infrastructure upgrades is returned unused to National Treasury.
Consider this carefully:
While our community battles deteriorating sewage infrastructure and children navigate polluted streets, the resources for solutions sit idle.
Your Presence Matters
Attend the upcoming Draft Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget Review:
Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 17:00, at the Madiba Banqueting Halls
This meeting decides whether the allocated R40 million will finally fix our sewage crisis or disappear again.
Representatives from all impacted wards (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 15, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 28) will be present. Your elected councillors are ready to speak, but they can't do it without your backing.
When we attend in numbers, we transform apathy into action.
Everyone’s Fight – Beyond Political Lines
This issue transcends political differences. It’s about dignity, health, and a safe environment for everyone. Potchefstroom is your city, and this budget is your money. Right now, our city urgently needs your support.
How You Can Help
Be there on 7 May. Invite family, neighbours, and community groups.Continue sharing evidence of municipal failures.Insist the allocated funds be fully utilised this year.
Let’s Not Waste Another Year
The JBMCC legal action highlights the severity of our situation, but true, lasting change only happens when we, the community, unite with a single voice: enough is enough.
Now is our chance. Let's fill the meeting halls—not the streets.

Jungle Gym
Sensory Pathway
Vegetable Garden
In-Ground Trampolines

Featured Initiative 2: Meet Yolindi – 15 Years Old and Aiming for the World Stage
If you’ve ever wandered past Hoër Volkskool’s Astro and seen a midfielder tearing up the turf with fearless tackles and pinpoint passes, chances are you’ve spotted Yolindi Botes. At just 15, this Grade 10 learner has already earned her place on South Africa’s squad for the Elite Invitational Hockey Tour in the Netherlands this October – a life-changing opportunity that could catapult her game, and her dreams, to the next level.

From Netball “Backup Plan” to Hockey Obsession
Back in Grade 4, Yolindi swapped netball hoops for a hockey stick “just to try something new.” Fast-forward six years and the sport has become her heartbeat. She chuckles at hockey’s “non-contact” label – her bruises tell a different story – but every bump and ricochet has only sharpened her resolve.
The Call-Up Heard Around Menlopark
During a recent tour to Pretoria’s Menlopark, Yolindi’s U-16A team faced some of Gauteng’s toughest sides. The results didn’t all go their way, but her grit caught national selectors’ eyes: five Volkskool players, including Yolindi, were tapped for the Netherlands tour. Imagine being 15, seeing your name on that list, and realising you’re about to wear the green-and-gold on European turf.
A R55,500 Price Tag – and a Community Challenge
Great dreams come with real costs. Flights, accommodation, visas, kit and coaching add up to R55 500 – a daunting figure for one family, but pocket change when an entire community chips in. That’s where StroomCares steps up: our town’s digital home for causes that matter.
Why This Tour Matters
World-class coaching: Sessions with top European players and mentors.
International exposure: Matches against elite Dutch clubs – a true benchmark for SA talent.
Legacy for Potch: Every skill she brings home lifts local hockey standards.

No amount is too small: R10, R100 or R1 000 – every rand moves her a step closer to the boarding gate at OR Tambo.
More Than a Game
Off the field, Yolindi is learning leadership, resilience and teamwork – qualities that outlast any scoreboard. She credits SA midfielder Shona – her role model – for showing that attitude and humility keep doors open long after the final whistle.

Let’s Do This, Potch!
StroomCares has seen this town rally for medical bills, school tours and flood relief. Now let’s add international hockey dream to that list. Share her story, open your hearts (and maybe your wallets), and watch a young Potchefstroomer make history in orange-tinged Dutch stadiums this spring.
Together, we’re stronger. Together, we’re StroomCares.

Safety Starts With Us – Meet the CPF Keeping Potch Safe
A Coffee-Table Chat That Packs a Punch
When Stroom Stories host Pieter hit the “Go Live” button, he expected a friendly chat. What he got instead was an eye-opener. Across the table sat Herman (Chair) and Fanie (Vice-Chair) of the Community Policing Forum (CPF)-Potchefstroom—two men who run the engine room where police plans meet street realities. Within minutes viewers realised: safety in Potch doesn’t start with sirens; it starts with us.

CPF 101: More Than a Neighbourhood Watch
Forget the idea of a few locals in reflective vests. The CPF is a statutory body under the Police Act, recognised by SAPS and mandated to:
Link police and public from residents and businesses to churches and NGOs.
Spot crime patterns and co-design strategies to stop them.
Hold SAPS accountable through open meetings and shared stats.
Four Sectors, One Mission
Potchefstroom is carved into four sectors, each run by its own CPF chair and team. They meet monthly, feed intelligence to an executive committee, and gather for a full CPF council where crime figures, and hard-won victories, are laid bare.
The Go-To Guy Barges In (For Good Reason)
Mid-stream, Frans Joubert—owner of The Go-To Guy, popped onto camera. He admitted he’d barely heard of the CPF before researching for this piece. “It’s the official bridge between us and SAPS, yet most residents have no clue,” he said, pledging to amplify CPF wins across Potch Gazette’s platforms.
WhatsApp: Potch’s Digital Panic Button
Each sector builds a layered messaging tree, from street-level chats up to SAPS liaisons. Verified intel moves up and down in seconds, even if the CPF logo never appears on your screen. Potch Gazette’s community manager, Karen, is busy crafting a directory so you can tap straight into your sector group.
Report, Report, Report—Here’s Why
Believe the myth that reporting petty theft “won’t help”? Think again. Under-reported crime skews national statistics, which in turn controls how many police vehicles and officers Potch is allocated. “We’ve seen residents wait two hours for backup—not from laziness, but lack of wheels,” Herman stresses. Your case number is your community’s budget request.
How You Can Step In
Join your sector meeting, one evening a month can shift the stats.
Volunteer to patrol or admin, there’s a role for every skill set.
Share verified info, gossip fuels fear; facts fuel safety.
Closing Thought
The CPF doesn’t do banners or parades. It does early alarms, late-night spreadsheets, and quiet victories that let kids ride bikes without a second thought. Potchefstroom’s safety is our collective assignment, no politics, just pavement.

Three Clashes You Can’t Afford to Miss
Opening Night Fireworks – 10 May
Dorp hosts Sibanye in what’s often dubbed the “North-West vs Free-State derby.” Last season’s opener ended in a nail-biting 23-21 thriller; expect both packs to pick up where they left off.
Impala in Town – 31 May
Impala arrive at home Stadium. If you only attend one home game before winter recess, make it this one.
Lions at the Den – 2 August
The penultimate round takes Dorp to Klerksdorp. Both sides could be jostling for a top-two berth, so playoff atmospheres are almost guaranteed.
Pathway to August Glory
Fourteen rounds decide the semi-final seeding, but momentum in July is everything—recent history shows league leaders after Round 10 have lifted the cup four times in five seasons. Head coach Jaco “Jakkals” Visser believes his side’s depth will keep legs fresh deep into winter:
“Rotation is key. We’ve built a squad where any jersey can be filled without dropping intensity.”
If Dorp secure a top-two finish, they’ll host a semi-final on 16 August, a crucial advantage given the cauldron-like roar Potch supporters bring.

It’s the 57th round of Grain SA’s NAMPO Harvest Day – and this year’s theme says it all: “Global Agriculture, Locally!” Sounds fancy, but really, it’s about using the best the world has to offer without forgetting your roots.
