The distance between a crisis and a second chance is often bridged by the dedication of a few and the generosity of many. Paws Haven, is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned animals, has recently become a focal point of intense community activity. Through a combination of high-endurance athletic feats, local fundraisers, and tireless rescue work, the organization is navigating a challenging financial landscape with transparency and a deep reliance on public support.

The Staggering Logistics of Animal Care
To understand the scope of the work at Paws Haven, one must first look at the sheer volume of resources required to maintain daily operations. The shelter currently manages an extensive population of rescues, leading to a massive daily logistical demand. On any given day, the facility consumes:
70 kg of dog food with meat
120 kg of dog food without meat
40 kg of cat food
This total of over 180 kg of food per day represents a constant race against time and dwindling supplies. Beyond the nutritional needs, the organization is currently facing a significant financial hurdle, with a vet account deficit totaling R51,000. This balance covers essential medical interventions, ranging from routine vaccinations to complex surgeries and lifesaving treatments for the animals brought into their care.

Culinary Success and Upcoming Events
In an effort to bridge this financial gap, the shelter has turned to a classic South African favorite: the pancake. A recent fundraising event held on March 14, 2026, exceeded all expectations, requiring volunteers to replenish ingredients four times and even purchase additional cooking equipment mid-day to keep up with demand. The event successfully raised R1,200 from pancake sales alone, contributing to a total weekend collection of over R4,200.

Building on this momentum, Paws Haven has announced a "takeover" event for this coming weekend, Saturday, 21 March. Utilizing the momentum of the previous success, the shelter will once again offer its popular pancake deal, 10 pancakes for R50, made possible by local sponsorships. Potch Gas is providing the fuel for a four-burner setup, while Turkstra has donated 10L of pancake mix. Adding to the menu, the shelter will introduce "Cheese Wors Rolls" at R45 each. To accommodate the expected crowds, local businesses like Bailie Park Spar and Zig Zag have stepped in to provide refreshments.

Heroes on Two Wheels and in the Trenches
The fundraising efforts are further bolstered by extraordinary individual contributions. Local cyclist Shaun Leach is currently preparing for a monumental "All 4 Paws" journey. Starting 21 March, Leach will cycle approximately 2,600 km from the Beitbridge border post to Blouberg in the Western Cape. This unsupported ride requires him to cover an average of 220 km daily, spending up to 12 hours on the road.
Leach’s motivation is deeply personal; the shelter previously rescued his sheepdog, Jemma, and provided life-saving treatment when she contracted a severe illness. His goal is to raise awareness for animal shelters nationwide while specifically driving donations toward the Paws Haven medical fund.
While Leach tackles the open road, other volunteers are busy on the ground. A recent rescue operation highlighted the grit required for shelter work when a puppy was found trapped in a storm drain.
Despite the difficult and unsanitary conditions, volunteer Tokkie climbed into the drain to retrieve the terrified animal. Such incidents serve as a reminder of the "always-on" nature of animal rescue, where emergencies do not wait for business hours.

Sustainable Support through Mom’s Closet
Beyond one-off events, Paws Haven operates "Mom’s Closet," a thrift-style fundraiser that turns donated clothing and household items into medical funding. This initiative, run entirely by volunteers, has become a vital revenue stream. The shop features high-quality items, many with original tags, sold at bargain prices.
The organization has recently improved the facility, including a renovated bathroom for fittings, to enhance the shopping experience. This specific fundraising drive is ongoing until the end of March, providing ample opportunity for the public to browse and buy. All proceeds from these sales are funneled directly toward the R51,000 veterinary debt, proving that every small purchase contributes to a larger mission of mercy.

A Call for Continued Involvement
As the winter months approach, the needs of the shelter are expected to increase. Beyond financial contributions, Paws Haven is actively seeking donations of dog, cat, puppy, and kitten food to keep up with their 180 kg daily requirement. The community is invited not just to donate, but to participate, whether by pre-ordering pancakes for the weekend or visiting the shelter to take a rescue dog for a walk during the event. Through this blend of community spirit and individual sacrifice, Paws Haven continues to provide a sanctuary for those who cannot speak for themselves.
