Mandela Day, celebrated annually on 18 July, is more than just a day of remembrance, it is a global movement for positive change, inspired by Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of public service. This year, West Acres Shopping Centre is embracing the spirit of giving with a dynamic “Collect-a-Can” drive aimed at mobilizing young people to help feed a local shelter. The initiative blends civic responsibility with a touch of friendly competition, creating a meaningful way for youth to participate in Mandela Day.

The Challenge: Collect to Make a Difference
The “Collect-a-Can” campaign officially runs from 19 June to 17 July. During this time, young people aged 12–18 are invited to gather as many canned food items as possible. The final haul will be weighed and donated to a local shelter on Mandela Day itself, 18 July. This initiative not only supports food security efforts but also instills a sense of service in younger generations.
The Prize: A Reward for Compassion and Effort
While the main reward lies in the act of giving, West Acres is sweetening the deal with a competitive twist. The individual who collects the heaviest load of canned food (minimum 30kg) will win a cash prize of R2000, generously sponsored by West Acres. This adds an element of excitement and motivation to the noble cause, encouraging more participation and higher impact.
Logistics: How and Where to Participate
Participants must bring their collected cans to West Acres Centre on 17 July before 12:00 PM. The official weigh-in will take place in front of Kryolan, ensuring transparency and fair play. It’s a one-day window that sets the stage for community involvement, public recognition, and impactful donation.
One Can at a Time: The Broader Message
The slogan, “Let’s make a difference, one can at a time,” echoes the core philosophy of Mandela Day, that every individual has the power to change the world for the better. By rallying local youth around a tangible, achievable goal, the Collect-a-Can campaign not only provides for those in need but also nurtures future leaders grounded in empathy and action.

A Small Act, A Big Impact
As Mandela Day approaches, the Collect-a-Can initiative at West Acres stands as a beacon of community-driven change. With just a few weeks to go, there’s still time for teens to rally their friends, families, and schools to join in. Whether it’s one can or a hundred, each donation counts.
This Mandela Day, let’s honour Madiba’s legacy, one generous act at a time.
