The 2025 NWU Sport Awards proved to be a shining moment for Potch Track Club, as its athletes and staff took center stage in recognition of a stellar year marked by international representation and record-breaking performances. The event, held at North-West University (NWU), celebrated the dedication, resilience, and world-class talent nurtured within Potchefstroom’s athletics community.

Athletics Merit Awards: Rising Stars on the Global Stage
Four standout athletes from Potch Track Club, Luan Munnik, Keanu Domingo, Christopher Swart, and Amogelang Tatai, received the prestigious Athletics Merit Award for their exceptional achievements during the 2025 season.
Luan Munnik and Keanu Domingo, both NWU students, proudly represented South Africa in the 1500m event at the World University Games in Germany, demonstrating their consistency and competitiveness on an international level.
Christopher Swart earned his award for his participation in the 800m event, showing remarkable progress and discipline throughout the season.
Amogelang Tatai impressed on the continental stage, representing South Africa in both the 1500m and 5000m at the African Championships in Nigeria; a testament to his endurance and versatility as a distance runner.
Their collective achievements highlight the continued success of Potch Track Club in developing world-class athletes under the NWU athletics program.

Special Awards: Recognising Leadership and Legacy
Two of the club’s most respected figures, Coach Jean Verster and Elroy Gelant, were honoured with Special Awards in Athletics for their outstanding contributions to South African sport.
Jean Verster, a long-time head coach and mentor at NWU, was celebrated for his appointment as Team Manager for South Africa at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where he played a pivotal leadership role in guiding national athletes on the world stage.
Elroy Gelant, a decorated long-distance runner and NWU staff member, was commended for representing South Africa in the marathon at the same championships, and for his remarkable achievement earlier this year when he broke the South African Marathon Record in Hamburg, Germany.
Both Verster and Gelant exemplify the spirit of excellence that Potch Track Club continues to foster, combining mentorship, professionalism, and elite performance.
