Potchefstroom Hospital recently conducted two significant events highlighting its commitment to comprehensive patient care: a commemoration of World AIDS Day and a successful drive to address a backlog in spectacle provision. These initiatives underscore the facility's dedication to tackling major health challenges and improving patient services.

Commemorating World AIDS Day
On Friday, December 5, 2025, Potchefstroom Hospital held its World AIDS Day commemoration at the Residence Hall. The event was led by the Outpatient Department Operational Manager, Onthatile Mokolometsa, and featured several departments and external partners who provided crucial information to attendees.
The commemoration focused on providing assistance regarding the hospital's patient care provision for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Matron Sandra Monku acknowledged the significant impact the condition is having on the community, noting the strain it places on local resources. She offered assurance that patients are being treated with respect and confirmed that a comprehensive plan is actively underway. This plan aligns with the "1.1 million treatment gap" initiative launched by the
Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, which aims to expand access to life-saving treatment. The session effectively underscored the facility's commitment to tackling the challenges inherent in providing quality patient care for HIV/AIDS.

Addressing the Spectacle Backlog: Vision Care Campaign
Complementing its focus on general health, the hospital successfully executed a vision care campaign. On Thursday, November 6, 2025, the Outpatient Department and Ophthalmology Department, in partnership with Optometrist Dr. Maleka, addressed a backlog of 160 spectacles that had been received earlier.
The collaboration rolled out a vibrant campaign at the hospital, successfully dispensing spectacles to clients who had been patiently waiting. The facility expressed its appreciation to the community for their understanding during the process.
The purpose of this drive was multi-faceted:
Education: To educate recipients on the paramount importance of taking care of their eyes.
Awareness: The team conducted an awareness session on how to properly care for these specialised spectacles.
Highlighting Impact: The team highlighted the adverse impact of not having spectacles, particularly for individuals struggling with significant vision problems.
During this spectacles drive, the hospital, together with its various partners and role players, reached a mutual agreement to continue working together to promote eye care among community members, cementing a commitment to sustained vision health initiatives.
A Future Focused on Comprehensive Patient Welfare
Through both the World AIDS Day commemoration and the successful spectacle drive, Potchefstroom Hospital has demonstrated a robust commitment to addressing not only chronic public health issues but also critical quality-of-life concerns.
The collaborative spirit shown by hospital departments and external partners ensures a holistic approach to patient welfare, setting a positive precedent for continued improvement in healthcare provision for the community.
