The Potchefstroom Library was the scene of both celebration and nostalgia this week, as a reading competition for young learners coincided with the retirement of two of its most dedicated staff members.

Farewell to Two Library Pillars
The event was marked by mixed emotions as the community also bid farewell to Ms. C. Brandt and Ms. C.M. Mokwena, two long-serving staff members whose careers became intertwined with the life of the library.
Ms. Brandt concluded 42 years of service as Assistant Librarian, while Ms. Mokwena retired after 45 years as Librarian. Both women were recognized for their unwavering dedication to the Potchefstroom Town Library under the Department of Sport, Art, and Culture. Colleagues and community members praised their honesty, passion, and commitment, noting that their legacy will remain a cornerstone of the institution.
Promoting a Culture of Reading
On 22 August, learners from primary schools in Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp gathered at the library to take part in a reading competition aimed at encouraging a love for books and strengthening literacy skills. The event highlighted the importance of reading as a foundation for learning and personal growth, while also giving children the opportunity to showcase their talents in a supportive environment.

A Lasting Legacy
Their departure leaves behind not only decades of professional expertise but also warm memories of their impact on countless readers who passed through the library’s doors. The timing of the farewell alongside the children’s reading competition served as a reminder of the library’s dual role: nurturing future generations while honoring those who have shaped its history.
The Potchefstroom Library continues to stand as a place where knowledge and community meet, inspired by the efforts of its retiring staff and energized by the young readers stepping forward.
