Between 12 and 22 July 2025, Potchefstroom and its surrounding areas experienced a series of traffic incidents, fire outbreaks, protest disruptions, and law enforcement operations. The following report presents verified updates received from Potchefstroom First Responders and affiliated security and emergency services. The report covers critical incidents, road disruptions, fire risk alerts, and public safety measures in a neutral and fact-based format.
12 July: Fatal Pedestrian Accident on the N12
A pedestrian-vehicle collision occurred on Govan Mbeki Road near the Viljoenskroon turn-off. One lane of the N12 was obstructed due to the incident. Emergency services responded to the scene, and motorists were urged to proceed with caution.
14 July: Protest Action, Traffic Risks, and Security Response
Protest Disruption:
The Rysmierbult road was blocked with rocks due to protest action. SAPS was activated and responded to the area. Commuters were advised to avoid the route.
Bicycle Accident:
A bicycle accident occurred at the intersection of Peter Mokaba and Maree Streets. First responders and authorities were present at the scene.
Traffic Light Malfunction:
The traffic lights at Retief and Walter Sisulu Streets (near Rio Café) were reported out of order. This posed a potential traffic hazard, and authorities were notified.
CBS Security Incident:
In the evening, CBS Security's armed response team apprehended a suspect attempting to steal gas bottles after breaching an electric fence. The suspect was detained and later arrested. Repairs to the damaged fence were completed the same night.
16–17 July: Community Repairs and Heightened Fire Risk
Pothole Repairs Notification (16 July):
AfriForum and local residents planned road repairs on Kock Street (Piet Bosman Street) in front of Snowflake for the following morning. Volunteers were called to assist with traffic direction. Road use was discouraged during the repair window from 09:00 to 11:00 on 17 July.
Protest Action Resumed:
Rysmierbult road was again affected by protest activity. SAPS and the Provincial Traffic Police responded.
Fire Danger Index (FDI):
On 17 July, the fire risk level rose from moderate to high (FDI orange). A total fire ban was issued for the area, with “geen voorbrande” (no firebreaks) enforced. Gust wind speeds reached up to 35 km/h.
18 July: Road Closures and Veld Fires
Traffic Incidents:
A motor vehicle accident occurred on the N12 toward Johannesburg. The road remained open, and emergency services responded.
A major incident took place at Govan Mbeki and Retief Street, leading to a full road closure. Authorities were on-site, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
Veld Fires:
A large fire broke out in the Vredefort Dome area. The landowner funded aerial support, and ground teams including local farmers assisted. No injuries or livestock losses were reported.
Another veld fire was reported in the Roodekraal area. Volunteer Fire Fighters responded amid reports that nearby homes could be at risk.
19 July: Mooibank Road Incident
A vehicle accident occurred on Mooibank Road just outside of Potchefstroom. The road remained open. Emergency services, including EMRS, ER24, Mooirivier Beskerming, and JB Marks Fire and Rescue, responded to the scene.
20–21 July: Crime Report and Missing Persons Alert
Reitz Street Incident (20 July):
A suspect gained unlawful entry into a residential complex by tailgating a vehicle at the gate. The suspect fled with stolen property but was apprehended shortly after by Cachet Park CID Reaction Officers. A case was opened, and SAPS took the suspect into custody.
Missing Persons Alert (21 July):
SAPS Klerksdorp released a statement requesting public assistance in locating Christiaan van Blerk (34) and Donovan van der Walt (25), last seen on 14 July. They were traveling in a white Toyota Hilux Raider (KWF254NW) and were reported missing after failing to return from a work-related errand. Descriptions, contact details, and tip-off lines were provided to the public.
21 July: N12 Congestion and Post-Accident Update
Major traffic congestion was reported on the N12 near the licensing offices, where a detour was put in place. Earlier, about 20 accident victims were treated and transported to hospital following a serious crash. Some required extrication with the Jaws of Life. The road was later reopened.
22 July: Weather and Fire Risk Update
According to the Potchefstroom Fire Protection Association (PFPA), the Fire Danger Index for 22 July was yellow (moderate). Conditions included low temperatures between 6°C–19°C, light eastern winds at 7 km/h, and gusts reaching 17 km/h. Fires could start and spread slowly under these conditions

Potchefstroom experienced a wide range of public safety incidents over the past ten days, from fatal accidents and infrastructure challenges to fire hazards and protest disruptions.
