Proteas Women Keep the Momentum: Third Straight Win Puts South Africa in Strong Semi-Final Position

The Proteas Women continued their dream run at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, clinching a nail-biting three-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Visakhapatnam on Monday. With this result, South Africa made it three consecutive wins, climbing to third place on the points table and tightening their grip on a semi-final spot.

Gritty Start by Bangladesh

Bangladesh, opting to bat first, showed intent from the start but were kept under control by South Africa’s disciplined bowling. Openers Farzana Haque and Rubya Haider put on their best stand of the tournament before Chloe Tryon and Nonkululeko Mlaba swung the momentum back in the Proteas’ favour.

After the early breakthroughs, Sharmin Akter (50) and captain Nigar Sultana Joty rebuilt the innings, taking Bangladesh beyond the 100-run mark. The real fireworks came in the final overs, with Shorna Akter smashing a 51 off 33 balls, the fastest half-century of the tournament, supported by Ritu Moni (24)* to lift Bangladesh to 232/6 in their 50 overs.

Tryon led the bowling effort with 1/44, while Mlaba, Kapp, and de Klerk maintained tight control through the middle overs.

South Africa’s Chase: Resilience Under Pressure

The chase began shakily when Nahida Akter dismissed Tazmin Brits with her very first delivery. Captain Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch steadied the innings with a solid 50-run stand, but Bangladesh struck back quickly, taking three wickets in succession to leave South Africa reeling at 78/5.

With pressure mounting, Marizanne Kapp (56) and Chloe Tryon (62) stepped up once again, producing an 85-run partnership that turned the tide. Their measured aggression took the game deep before both fell in quick succession.

Just when Bangladesh sensed a breakthrough, Nadine de Klerk , the hero of the India match, took charge. With eight runs needed off the final over, de Klerk, dropped in the penultimate one, held her nerve and sealed victory in style with a towering six over long-on. South Africa reached 236/7 with three balls to spare, sparking celebrations in the Proteas dugout.

For her brilliant 62 off 66 balls and economical spell of 1/44, Chloe Tryon was named Player of the Match. Her leadership with both bat and ball once again proved crucial, ensuring the Proteas maintained control in tense phases of the game.

What This Win Means

The victory marked South Africa’s third consecutive win, placing them third on the World Cup standings with six points. It also showcased their growing confidence and balance across all departments, from disciplined bowling to calculated finishing under pressure.
