The Fanie du Toit Sports Ground was transformed into a fortress of purple pride this past Monday as both the FNB NWU Eagles and their Young Guns counterparts delivered a masterclass in home-ground dominance. In what can only be described as a perfect day for Potchefstroom rugby, the Eagles soared to a massive victory over the FNB Emeries, while the Young Guns proved their championship pedigree by outlasting a fierce Maties side.
From the first whistle at 14:00 until the final celebrations under the floodlights, the atmosphere was electric. The "Purple Walls" of the stands were packed with a passionate home crowd whose voices carried the teams through every heavy hit and clinical try. It wasn't just about the points on the board; it was about a statement of intent for the rest of the 2026 season.

Eagles Ascendant: A 63-Point Statement
The FNB NWU Eagles walked onto the pitch with the weight of expectation on their shoulders, and they responded with a ruthless 63-15 demolition of the FNB Emeries. The hosts wasted no time, establishing a rhythm that the newcomers simply couldn't disrupt. By halftime, the score sat at a staggering 35-5, with the Eagles showcasing a blend of disciplined defense and expansive, line-breaking rugby.
The standout performer of the night was undoubtedly Therlow Prins. The flying winger, wearing jersey number 11, was a constant thorn in the Emeries' side. Prins displayed a lethal combination of raw pace and tactical positioning, crossing the whitewash three times to secure a spectacular hat-trick. His performance earned him the well-deserved FNB Player of the Match honors.
While the Emeries attempted a brief fightback early in the second half with two quick tries, the Eagles’ composure remained unshaken. They squeezed the life out of the game through dominant set pieces and clinical finishing from the likes of Ricardo Fourie and Jason Oosthuizen. When the final whistle blew, the 63-15 scoreline reflected a team that is currently playing a different brand of rugby.

Match Scorers:
FNB NWU (63): Tries by Therlow Prins (3), Ricardo Fourie (2), Tian Van Zyl, Luan Van der Walt, Jason Oosthuizen.
FNB Emeries (15): Tries by Chijindu Okonta, Edward Sigauke, Christoff Etzebeth.

Young Guns Fire First: A Thriller Against Maties
The winning momentum actually started much earlier in the day. At 14:00, the FNB NWU Young Guns took to the field against the FNB Maties Young Guns in a highly anticipated clash of the academies. It was a physical, high-intensity encounter that kept the early-bird fans on the edge of their seats.
The match was a seesaw battle of attrition. Maties brought the heat, but the NWU youngsters showed incredible grit and maturity to stay ahead in the closing stages. With a final score of 33-26, the Young Guns secured their first home win of the season, setting the perfect tone for the senior side to follow.
