The JB Marks Local Municipality has confirmed that repair work remains ongoing at Ikageng Water Pump Station 7, following a mechanical breakdown that disrupted water supply to several parts of the city earlier this week. The breakdown affected water pumping to the Ikageng West Reservoir, leaving areas such as Ikageng Proper (Old Ikageng) and Potch Industria with low pressure or no water since the weekend.

⚙️ Mechanical Breakdown and Immediate Response
According to a public notice issued by the municipality on Tuesday, 28 October, the breakdown occurred at one of the station’s key pumping units, which is responsible for transferring water to the Ikageng West Reservoir.
A contractor appointed by the municipality was immediately deployed to the site to carry out assessments and begin the mechanical restoration process. The municipality confirmed that the team has been working continuously to restore the system to full operational capacity.
While significant progress has been reported, pumping operations have not yet resumed, pending completion of the final phase of mechanical repairs and system testing.
💧 Areas Affected and Impact on Supply
The interruption has primarily impacted residents and businesses in:
Ikageng Proper (Old Ikageng)
Potch Industria
Surrounding zones supplied via the Ikageng West Reservoir
These areas have experienced intermittent or severely reduced water pressure since the incident. The municipality has urged all residents in affected zones to use water sparingly and store available water responsibly until full service is restored.
Essential facilities, including clinics, schools, and small businesses, have been advised to implement short-term water management plans during the disruption.

🧰 Municipal Statement and Public Communication
In its latest statement, the JB Marks Local Municipality reiterated that repairs form part of its accelerated infrastructure maintenance programme, aimed at stabilizing key utility systems across Potchefstroom and surrounding areas.
The municipality also expressed sincere regret for the inconvenience caused to households and businesses, assuring residents that teams remain on-site until full restoration is achieved.
However, the municipality did not provide a specific timeline for when water pumping would resume, noting that work is dependent on the completion of technical safety checks once repairs are finalised.
📢 Current Status: Awaiting Further Update
As of Wednesday, 29 October 2025, the municipality has not issued a further update regarding the completion of the repair work or the exact time for restoration of normal water supply.
Residents are encouraged to monitor official JB Marks Local Municipality communication channels , including verified social media pages and the municipal website, for real-time updates on the situation.
The incident underscores the importance of ongoing infrastructure maintenance within the city’s water network and highlights efforts to enhance long-term service reliability for communities across Ikageng and Potchefstroom.
