The Merafong City Local Municipality has issued a public notice regarding a rescheduled electricity shutdown affecting several key areas. Initially planned for late January but delayed due to technical hurdles and adverse weather conditions, the essential maintenance at the Frikkie Van Der Merwe Substation is now set to take place on Thursday, 05 February 2026.
The outage is scheduled to last ten hours, running from 08:00 to 18:00. Municipal officials have indicated that this disruption is a critical step in the city’s ongoing infrastructure renewal strategy.

Technical Scope and Infrastructure Upgrades
According to the notice signed by Municipal Manager Dumisani D. Mabuza, the shutdown is required to facilitate the commissioning of a new 5 MVA transformer. This installation is part of a broader effort to modernize the local electricity grid, which has faced significant pressure in recent years due to expanding residential developments.
The municipality stated that the upgrade aims to:
Improve overall supply reliability.
Increase system capacity to meet growing demand.
Reduce the frequency of unplanned outages in the region.

Affected Areas
The planned shutdown will result in a total loss of power for residents and businesses in the following sectors:
Welverdiend and Welverdiend Extension 6
Elijah Barayi
Khutsong 60’s
Khutsong Ring 1, Ring 2, and Ring 3
Khutsong Extension 5
Safety and Precautionary Measures
The municipality has urged all affected parties to treat all electrical installations as live for the entire duration of the maintenance period. This serves as a safety precaution in the event that work is completed and power is restored earlier than the anticipated 18:00 cutoff.

Local businesses and residents are advised to make the necessary arrangements to mitigate the impact of the ten-hour disruption. The municipality has expressed its apologies for the inconvenience caused by the rescheduling, noting that the work remains essential for the long-term stability of the city's energy network.
