The seventeenth South African Army Fittest Soldier Competition continues to surge forward, with Days 3 and 4 bringing both recognition and renewed trials of endurance. The introduction of the inaugural Flower Ceremony on Tuesday evening, 02 September 2025, marked a proud moment of celebration, where medals were awarded to competitors who had excelled in the early physical protocols.
By the following day, soldiers were back in action at the Kopanelo Military Sports Club, facing the unrelenting demands of the Functional Fitness Test, an event that pushed every boundary of strength, stamina, and grit. In parallel, the broader Defence Force spirit was on display in Durban, where the South African National Defence Force Male Netball Team competed in the National Male Netball Championships at Hoy Park, reminding all that SANDF’s commitment to athletic excellence extends beyond the battlefield.

Day 3: First Flower Ceremony
Recognition of Excellence
The first-ever Flower Ceremony of the Fittest Soldier Competition was held at 4 Artillery Regiment on the evening of 02 September. The hall was alive with applause as soldiers stood proudly on podiums, receiving medals for their performances in the earlier protocols: the 2.4km run, push-ups, sit-ups, swimming, shuttle runs, and the Bronco Test.
The medalists represented the finest of the Army’s athletic spirit, men and women whose determination and skill carried them into the top three positions. As medals glistened under the lights, camaraderie was palpable. Competitors congratulated one another, with cheers echoing through the hall not just for individual success but for collective resilience.
Leadership Encouragement
Lieutenant Colonel B. Mabee, Officer Commanding of 4 Artillery Regiment, addressed the gathered soldiers with words that resonated deeply:“To the warriors of the Fittest Soldier Competition… you, the participants. You have pushed your bodies to the edge, and you saw the strength of your spirit. A lot of sweat and aching muscles showed what it means to be resilient, disciplined, and committed.”
He emphasized respect for perseverance as much as for podium finishes, ensuring that all competitors felt seen and valued. Supported by the South African Army Foundation, the Flower Ceremony became more than a medal presentation; it was a celebration of endurance, unity, and the human dimension of soldiering.

Day 4: Functional Fitness Test
A Relentless Circuit
On Wednesday, 03 September, the Pride of Lions were once again tested to their limits in the Functional Fitness Test. Conducted at Kopanelo Military Sports Club, the circuit was engineered to simulate real-world demands in a condensed, high-intensity format.
Competitors sprinted repeatedly across lanes marked with lime, clouds of dust trailing in their wake. Explosive power was tested through the hoisting of weighted medicine balls onto elevated platforms. These same platforms then became stations for vaults, push-ups, and rapid transitions, testing agility under fatigue.
Steel and Sweat
The circuit intensified with sled pushes and pulls, as soldiers drove weighted steel sleds forward before dragging them back with thick ropes, muscles burning with each pull. Steel dummy rifles added another layer of physical demand, forcing competitors to balance stamina with tactical precision.
The final trial, a kettlebell carry across designated lanes, proved especially grueling. Soldiers gripped heavy steel weights tightly, their faces etched with strain but their steps steady, embodying the unwavering resilience of the South African Army.
Spirit Unbroken
Despite fatigue from prior days, including the Land Obstacle Course and the Artillery Surprise, competitors refused to falter. Each completed circuit was a statement of grit, determination, and refusal to yield. For spectators, it was a vivid reminder of the Army ethos: undaunted, unyielding, and fiercely committed.

Beyond Potchefstroom: SANDF Netball Championships
National Representation
While Potchefstroom hosted the Fittest Soldier trials, the SANDF’s sporting spirit was also on display in Hoy Park, Durban, where the South African National Defence Force Male Netball Team participated in the National Male Netball Championships 2025 from 01 to 05 September.
The team played with determination and pride, showcasing tactical discipline and resilience that echoed the same values seen in the Fittest Soldier competition. Their results from the first three matches were as follows:
SANDF 39 – 46 Capricorn B
SANDF 43 – 31 Bojanala
SANDF 39 – 41 Francis Baard
Despite close losses, the team’s victory against Bojanala highlighted their capability to overcome challenges and adapt under pressure.
Leadership Support
The squad was honored by a visit from Brigadier General B.S. Mutungutungu, Director of Physical Training, Sports and Recreation. Her words of encouragement reinforced the role of the team not only as competitors but as custodians of physical training within the SANDF. She urged them to carry the lessons of the championships back to their home units, uplifting fitness standards across the Defence Force.

Looking Ahead
With Day 4’s Functional Fitness Test concluded, the South African Army Fittest Soldier Competition 2025 edges closer to its final stages. The competition has already showcased a stunning variety of challenges, from the Strongman Challenge to the Artillery Surprise and the Land Obstacle Course, each designed to test a unique blend of strength, speed, endurance, and tactical adaptability.
At the same time, the SANDF’s participation in the National Male Netball Championships serves as a reminder that the Defence Force’s sporting excellence extends well beyond Potchefstroom, inspiring resilience and camaraderie on a national stage.

Final Word: Unity in Strength
The events of Days 3 and 4 reinforced a central truth: whether on the competition grounds of Potchefstroom or on the netball courts of Durban, the South African National Defence Force thrives on unity, discipline, and resilience.
The Flower Ceremony brought warmth and recognition, the Functional Fitness Test demanded sweat and willpower, and the Netball Championships displayed determination and tactical strength. Together, they paint a picture of a Defence Force where excellence is not confined to one field or one event, it is a living culture that binds soldiers and athletes alike.
