Skills Development Opportunities for the Unemployed

Updated: May 4

In a much-needed initiative aimed at empowering unemployed individuals across South Africa, the Department of Employment and Labour is rolling out a series of Skills Development Programmes under its Labour Activation Programmes Unit. These programmes are specifically designed to help work seekers gain practical, in-demand skills that can lead to employment opportunities or further training within key industries.

Who Can Apply?

This opportunity is open to all unemployed individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Age group: Applicants must be between 18 and 45 years old.

  • Education level: A minimum qualification of Grade 10 is required.

  • Preference: While everyone who qualifies can apply, preference will be given to UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) beneficiaries.

This initiative not only aims to reduce unemployment but also to equip participants with the tools needed to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the broader economy.

What Programmes Are on Offer?

Three highly practical and in-demand skills fields are covered in this offering:

  1. Building Construction – Ideal for individuals interested in the construction industry, offering hands-on training in areas like bricklaying, carpentry, and general construction practices.

  2. Plumbing – This programme focuses on residential and commercial plumbing skills, preparing learners for certification and employment in a critical trade.

  3. Electrical Engineering – A more technical route for those looking to develop skills in electrical installations, maintenance, and potentially moving toward formal engineering qualifications.

What Do You Need to Apply?

Interested candidates who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to submit the following documents when attending the submission venues:

  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • A certified copy of your ID

  • A copy of your latest school report

Having these documents ready ensures a smoother and quicker application process.

Submission Dates and Venues

To make the programme accessible to as many individuals as possible, submissions can be made on two separate dates at two different locations:

📍 First Submission Date:

  • Date: 6 May 2025

  • Time: 10:00

  • Venue: OR Tambo Hall, Ikageng

📍 Second Submission Date:

  • Date: 9 May 2025

  • Time: 10:00

  • Venue: Sarafina Hall, Ikageng

Applicants can choose the date and venue most convenient for them.

Why This Matters

South Africa faces high unemployment rates, especially among the youth. Initiatives like these represent a proactive step by the Department of Employment and Labour to address these challenges. By offering real skills that are aligned with market needs, this programme gives work seekers a renewed sense of purpose and the chance to build sustainable careers.

If you or someone you know is unemployed and fits the criteria, don’t miss this valuable opportunity to gain new skills and open the door to employment possibilities.
