SPAR Baby Proteas Off To A Blooming Start With A Win

The SPAR Baby Proteas began their 2025 Netball World Youth Cup campaign in Gibraltar with a commanding 102–27 victory over Barbados on Saturday. The performance marked South Africa’s intent to compete at the highest level, sending an early signal to their Pool D rivals.

Match Overview

Although Barbados claimed the opening goal from the centre pass, South Africa quickly took control and never looked back. Their sharp passing, disciplined structure, and relentless defensive pressure shaped the match from the first quarter.

The attacking combination of Giada Prinsloo and Luane Smith proved unstoppable, while captain Phophi Nematangari led the defensive unit with authority. Barbados struggled to find space as South Africa tightened control of the mid-court and finished the match with their highest-ever score against the islanders.

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown

  • Q1: SPAR Baby Proteas 25 – 07 Barbados

  • Q2: SPAR Baby Proteas 54 – 15 Barbados

  • Q3: SPAR Baby Proteas 77 – 21 Barbados

Head coach Precious Mthembu rotated her squad effectively. Renezia Andrews, called in as a late replacement for the injured Jade Atkins, made an impact off the bench. In the third quarter, defensive adjustments tightened Barbados’ scoring opportunities to just six goals while South Africa netted 34.
