In episode 24 of SportStroom, Drikus sits down with the experienced and passionate Athletics Director of Hoërskool Potchefstroom Gimnasium (affectionately known as Gimmies), Mr. Cyril Lawless. From his roots in Heidelberg to shaping one of the most successful athletics programs in the North West, Cyril shares the vision, structure, and heart that powers Gimmies athletics.

A Career Built on Jumps, Coaching, and Dedication
Cyril Lawless’ coaching career spans over 30 years, beginning in Heidelberg and stretching across the country to Stellenbosch and now Potchefstroom. As a certified Level 3 coach in all three major jumping disciplines, long jump, triple jump, and high jump, Cyril stands among a rare group of multi-specialists in South African athletics.
Having coached in various regions and schools, Cyril eventually settled in Potchefstroom to be closer to his children and in doing so, found his way to Gimmies.
Rebuilding the Curve: Gimmies on the Rise
When asked about the state of Gimmies athletics, Cyril describes a journey of resurgence. “Two years ago, we dipped,” he admits, “but this past year has been one of the best in many years.” With 24 athletes qualifying for the SA championships and 14 national medals secured, including an SA record in the U16 5,000m walk, the athletics program is clearly back on a winning trajectory.
The Role of an Athletics Director: More Than a Title
According to Cyril, the title of “Athletics Director” might sound formal, but at heart, it’s about being an organiser, motivator, and visionary. “You’re responsible for building a structure of coaches who believe in the same dream,” he says. Athletics, he adds, is one of the toughest school sports because it’s so individually exposing and success is only earned through grit and consistency.
Balancing School Sports: A Unified Front
One of the standout themes from the interview is Gimmies’ collaborative approach to sport. With students often involved in multiple disciplines, rugby, cricket, athletics, cooperation among departments is crucial. Directors of different codes work together to ensure learners aren’t overburdened or torn between commitments.
“We don’t pull athletes in different directions,” Cyril explains. “We find common ground. Everyone benefits when the school benefits.”

Pre-Season Planning: Four Months to Peak
High-performance results don’t happen overnight. At Gimmies, the pre-season starts as early as June, well before most schools kick off. Four months of structured prep ensures athletes build not just speed and strength, but endurance and technique.
Pre-season events like the NBC Top 30 and other Top 10 challenges provide early opportunities for students to sharpen their competitive edge, while also laying the groundwork for the year ahead.
Facilities, Community, and a Field with Heart
Gimmies boasts one of the most beautiful school athletics facilities in the country. A full 400m track, dedicated circles for shot put and discus, and a robust long-distance practice setup make it a training haven. The school is currently investing in upgrading its jump facilities to ensure top-class preparation in all disciplines.
Crucially, the community plays a major role in maintaining and enhancing the school’s infrastructure. From local farmers offering to mow the fields to parents volunteering their time, Gimmies thrives because it stays connected to Potchefstroom.
Building Bridges for the Future: Gimmies' Open Day
As Cyril notes, Gimmies is not just a place to grow as an athlete, but as a whole person. The upcoming Open Day on May 17 will showcase the full Gimmies experience, with student ambassadors from academics, culture, and sport all contributing to the day’s events.
Nearly 300 prospective Grade 8 learners have already registered, drawn by the school’s reputation, balanced program, and welcoming atmosphere. From mountain biking to choir, Gimmies offers more than 26 different sports and extracurriculars, ensuring that every child finds their niche.
A Vision for Holistic Growth
When asked about his long-term vision for athletics at Gimmies, Cyril is clear: it’s about creating a safe space where each learner can reach their full potential, whatever that looks like.
“We want to build a foundation for every child’s dream,” he says. “Not everyone will go to the Olympics, but if you give them the right structure, they’ll leave here better prepared for life.”
SportStroom Takeaway
Potchefstroom Gymnasium's athletics program is more than a medal-winning machine, it’s a nurturing, cooperative, and high-performing environment guided by experience, structure, and heart. With leaders like Cyril Lolis at the helm, Gimmies is setting the pace not just in the North West, but nationally.
