The school bells in Potchefstroom rang with a deeper sense of purpose this week as the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD), in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE), kicked off a vital Back-to-School campaign.
The initiative is designed to do more than just welcome learners back to the classroom; it aims to arm them with the legal knowledge and social awareness necessary to navigate the complexities of modern South African life.

Empowering Learners Through Dialogue
Today’s leg of the campaign saw officials visiting three prominent local institutions: Boitshoko High School, Tlokwe Secondary School, and Seiphemelo Secondary School. The atmosphere was one of active engagement, as students moved beyond their standard curriculum to tackle pressing societal issues.
The engagement focused on three pillars critical to the development of responsible, safe, and informed citizens:
1. Online Safety and Social Media Law
In an era where a single post can have lifelong consequences, learners were briefed on the legalities of the digital world. The discussion centered on:
Cyberbullying: Identifying the psychological impact and the legal repercussions for perpetrators.
Social Media Laws: Understanding that the "virtual" world is subject to real-world legislation, including the Cybercrimes Act.

2. Human Rights and the Constitution
To foster a culture of respect and civic duty, the delegation delved into the South African Constitution. Students explored their fundamental rights, while also reflecting on the responsibilities that come with those rights, ensuring they understand the legal framework that protects every South citizen.

3. The Fight Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Addressing one of the country's most significant challenges, the campaign provided a safe space to discuss GBV. The session focused on:
Awareness: Recognizing the early signs of abuse.
Resources: Providing clear pathways for reporting incidents.
Community: Encouraging a "speak out" culture to ensure schools remain a sanctuary for all learners.

A United Front
By bringing the Department of Justice directly into the school halls, the campaign bridges the gap between the law and the youth. It transforms abstract legal concepts into practical tools that students can use to protect themselves and their peers.
As the week progresses, the DOJ&CD and DBE continue to reinforce the message that an educated learner is an empowered one, and that the road to a safer South Africa begins at the school desk.
