There are races where you win, and then there are races where you make a statement. For Potchefstroom’s Luan Munnik, the final meet of the 2025 Fast Track Series in Stellenbosch was undoubtedly the latter.

In a display of raw speed and tactical discipline, the Potch Track Club athlete didn't just break his Personal Best (PB) in the 3000m; he shattered it.
Chasing the Lights
The "Track Nights" series is famous for its use of "Wave Light" technology, LED lights installed along the rail of the track that move at a specific pace to help runners hit their targets. But even with the lights guiding the way, conditions on the night were far from ideal, with elements reportedly not favoring the athletes.
That didn't stop Munnik. Entering the race with a previous best of 08:02.09, the goal was likely to dip under the magical 8-minute barrier. Munnik did far more than dip; he smashed through it.
The 9-Second Shift
Crossing the line in a blistering 7:53.45, Munnik shaved nearly nine seconds off his previous best time. In the world of middle-distance running, where improvements are often measured in milliseconds, a 9-second improvement is a massive leap forward.
It was a performance that secured him the win and served as a masterclass in what the club describes as "discipline, consistency, and hunger."
A Perfect End to the Season
Closing out the 2025 series with such a dominant performance sets a dangerous precedent for 2026. Munnik has proven that he can perform when the pressure is on and the conditions are tough.
For the Potch Track Club, this result is yet another feather in the cap, proving that Potchefstroom remains the factory of champions in South African athletics.
Congratulations, Luan. The sub-8 club has a new member!
