Tazmin Brits Makes ODI History with Five Centuries in 2025

South Africa’s opener Tazmin Brits has etched her name in cricket history by becoming the first woman to score five ODI centuries in a single calendar year. The 32-year-old achieved this milestone in emphatic fashion at the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, smashing a sparkling 101 off 89 balls against New Zealand in Indore.

This latest century not only powered the Proteas to a much-needed six-wicket victory, but also capped a record-breaking run of form for Brits in 2025. For context, the previous record for women’s ODI centuries in one year was four, a mark Brits has now surpassed with flair and consistency. Fittingly, her 101* vs New Zealand was Brits’ first-ever World Cup ton and earned her the Player of the Match award as South Africa reignited their World Cup campaign.

World Cup Heroics: 101* vs New Zealand

Coming off a disappointing opener against England, South Africa roared back to life thanks to Brits’ heroics. Chasing 232, she reached her century in just 87 balls, unleashing a mix of elegance and aggression that left the New Zealand bowlers searching for answers.

In partnership with Sune Luus, Brits put on a record 159-run stand for the second wicket, South Africa’s highest-ever partnership in a Women’s World Cup match. By the time Brits departed for 101 (15 fours, 1 six), the Proteas were cruising to victory. Luus (81* off 114) guided the team home with overs to spare, a powerful statement after their earlier loss.

Brits later admitted she was “just trying to stay positive,” crediting a new lucky bat and the team’s belief. Her calm confidence and match-winning intent earned her a standing ovation and the Player of the Match trophy.

Five Centuries in 2025: A Historic Run

Brits’ 2025 haul of five ODI hundreds showcases her remarkable consistency and match-winning prowess. Here’s a look at each record-breaking performance:

  2. 101 vs West Indies (Cave Hill, June) – Dominated the Caribbean attack with 8 fours and 4 sixes, earning Player of the Series honors as South Africa sealed the tour 2–1.

  3. 101 vs Pakistan (Lahore, September)* – Anchored a composed chase with an unbeaten 101 off 121 balls, giving South Africa a strong start to the series.

  4. 171 vs Pakistan (Lahore, September)* – A masterpiece. Brits smashed her career-best score off 141 balls, lifting South Africa to victory and clinching another Player of the Series award.

  5. 101 vs New Zealand (Indore, October) – Her latest ton on the World Cup stage, setting up South Africa’s crucial win and breaking the all-time calendar-year record.

Consistency, Records, and Reactions

In 2025, Brits has been a run-scoring machine, 749 runs in 11 ODI innings at an average above 80 and a strike rate near 100. Her achievements include:

  • Fastest ever (male or female) to seven ODI hundreds, reaching the milestone in just 41 innings.

  • First woman to score five ODI tons in a single year.

  • Three consecutive centuries, matching a record last set in 2017.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt praised her teammate. Social media erupted after her latest ton, with fans calling 2025 the “Year of Brits.” Former players, commentators, and teammates celebrated the achievement as a landmark moment for South African cricket and women’s sport as a whole.
