April 2026 has been a month of massive change and serious challenges for the City of Matlosana. From the provincial government stepping in to take over the council to a geological emergency that shut down our main highway, there has been no shortage of news. However, amidst the municipal drama and infrastructure woes, the spirit of the "City of People on the Move" remains strong through community outreach, sporting triumphs, and local resilience. This digest brings you the full story of the last 30 days.

Governance: A City Under Administration
The biggest story this month is the North West Provincial Executive’s decision to assume authority over the Matlosana Local Municipality. Invoking Section 139(1)(b) of the Constitution, the provincial leadership has effectively sidelined the local council following a total collapse in governance and financial management.
The Mercy Phetla Controversy
The final straw for the provincial government was the ongoing battle over the dismissed Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Mercy Phetla. Despite being found guilty of misconduct in a formal disciplinary hearing, a majority coalition in the council voted in February to reinstate her. This led to a fierce legal challenge from the Democratic Alliance (DA), and in April, the Mahikeng High Court issued an urgent order confirming that the council had no power to reverse disciplinary outcomes. Phetla is currently barred from performing any duties while forensic investigations into alleged fraud continue.
Forfeiture of Luxury Assets
Details emerged this month regarding the forfeiture of luxury vehicles linked to the fraud case involving municipal funds. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Hawks have successfully seized assets purchased with money meant for service delivery.
Forfeited Luxury Assets | Estimated Value |
Porsche (Multiple models) | R2.3 Million |
Black Maserati Levante S | R1.4 Million |
Silver/Grey Land Rover Range Rover | R1.0 Million |
Red Mercedes-Benz CLA200 | Part of Forfeiture Order |
The Mayor’s "Unfunded" Budget
On 30 April 2026, Executive Mayor Fikile Mahlope delivered the annual Budget Speech. While the speech promised a "new beginning," opposition parties were quick to point out that the municipality remains in a dire state, with over R11 billion in unauthorized, irregular, and wasteful expenditure recorded since the 2024/25 financial year. The city also risks having to return R23 million in unspent grant funding to the National Treasury because essential wastewater projects have been delayed.
Infrastructure: The N12 Sinkhole Emergency
For many residents, the defining event of April was the closure of our most vital transit corridor. On 20 April 2026, a high-pressure bulk water pipe managed by Midvaal Water burst near Stilfontein.
Developing Geotechnical Hazard
Because Stilfontein sits on sensitive dolomitic soil, the massive water leak quickly led to ground subsidence. The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) identified a "developing geotechnical hazard," forcing the immediate closure of the N12 lane from Potchefstroom to Stilfontein. Motorists reported seeing the asphalt visibly sagging, indicating that the ground beneath had been hollowed out.
Traffic Chaos and Diversions
The closure forced all heavy vehicles and commuters to divert through Khuma and Vermaasdrift. This has placed immense strain on residential roads that were not built for highway traffic. The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has called the situation a "disgrace," blaming years of poor maintenance on the ageing pipeline for the preventable damage.
Public Safety: Operation Shanela and Crime Watch
The SAPS has been out in force this month as part of Operation Shanela, a high-density strategy aimed at cleaning up our streets. Police Minister Bheki Cele marked the one-year anniversary of the operation with a series of major breakthroughs in the North West.
Regional Arrests: Between 16 and 22 April, over 18,000 suspects were arrested nationally, with a significant number of these occurring in Klerksdorp and Jouberton. Police focused on drug trafficking and illegal mining.
Explosives Seized: North West police seized 74 explosives this month, most of which were intended for use in "zama-zama" (illegal mining) activities and cash-in-transit robberies.
School Raid in Disaneng: On 10 April, criminals used heavy explosives to blow open the strong room doors at two local schools, stealing 26 laptops meant for learners.
Job Scams Warning: Klerksdorp police have urged residents to be wary of social media scams after the identity of a local teacher was stolen to trick job seekers into paying "application fees."
Mining and Agriculture News
The economic heart of Matlosana, its mines and farms, faced a mixture of tragedy and technical progress this month.
Tragedy at Moab Khotsong
The mining community is in mourning following a fatal accident at the Moab Khotsong mine near Orkney. An employee tragically lost their life in a locomotive-related incident. CEO Beyers Nel stated that the company is cooperating fully with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) to investigate the cause and prevent future occurrences.
Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Crisis
Farmers in the North West and Free State are battling a serious outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease. By late April, nearly 90 new cases were reported in a single week. The Department of Agriculture has received shipments of vaccines from Türkiye and Argentina to help stabilize the situation in high-risk zones.
Solar Boost for SMMEs
In better news, the Bokamoso Solar Project hosted an event in Kanana on 21 April, where they handed over specialized equipment to emerging farmers and local small businesses as part of their community support initiative.
Community spirit and Local Events
Despite the challenges, the residents of Matlosana have come together for several upliftment projects this month.
Kanana Outreach Program
On 21 April, the Office of the Speaker held a multi-stakeholder outreach at the Ikaheng Disability Centre in Kanana. Residents were able to access services from SASSA, the IEC, and the Aurum Institute without having to travel to the Klerksdorp CBD. A dedicated desk was also set up for people to report sewerage overflows and road defects directly to municipal engineers.
Charity and Wellness
Freedom Day Walk: On 27 April, hundreds of residents took part in a 5km Fun Walk at Matlosana Stadium in partnership with the Thabo Pelesane Foundation.
Hike, Chill & Braai: The city has announced a community hiking event at the Faan Meintjes Nature Reserve for May 1st, encouraging families to enjoy the local wildlife.
Sewer Awareness: The municipality has launched a campaign to stop residents from throwing foreign objects like fats and building materials into the sewers, which have caused "alarming levels" of blockages this month.
Sporting Highlights and School Pride
Sports continue to be a source of great pride for the region, even as our municipal facilities face neglect.
Cricket Dominance
The rivalry between Potchefstroom Gimnasium (Gimmies) and Hoërskool Klerksdorp (KHS) delivered a historic moment this month. Gimmies' opener Christivan Coetzer smashed an incredible unbeaten 109 from just 36 balls, leading his team to a 10-wicket victory.
Rugby Results
In the NWU 16 Series, KHS secured a solid win against Hoërskool Oosterlig with a final score of 53–13. Other local schools, including Wesvalia and Wolmaransstad, also recorded strong performances in their respective leagues.
Stadium Woes
While our athletes are excelling, the facilities they use are in a state of ruin. The Select Committee on Education and Creative Industries visited the region on 23 April and expressed "extreme disappointment" at the dilapidated state of our sporting grounds. Chairperson Makhi Feni has urged the municipality to look into public-private partnerships to repair the facilities, as the government does not currently have the budget for full restorations.
