Welcome back, Potchefstroom! We have officially wrapped up Week 23 of 2026, and the energy moving through our town and township over the past seven days has been absolutely spectacular. As the winter chill begins to bite, our local businesses, community organizations, and sports stars are heating things up across the board.

This week, The Go-To Guy team has been on a truly diverse beat. We’ve been tracking innovative medical research that puts Potch on the global map, checking out newly revamped retail spaces, enjoying a weekend of adrenaline-pumping township sports, and supporting vital local charity drives.
Our "Our Eyes in the Field" team has been operating at maximum capacity to ensure you don't miss a single beat of what's happening right on your doorstep. Grab a warm drink, settle into a comfortable chair, and enjoy your 10-minute briefing on the week that was.
Our Eyes in the Field: Potchefstroom
From weekend markets and heritage hallways to big Father's Day competitions and cutting-edge health research, here is how the Potchefstroom field beat unfolded in chronological order.
May 30 – 31: Weekend Markets and Community Flavors
We kicked off the turn of the month with a heavy dose of local support. The weekend started at the vibrant Dromers Mark 2026, which took over Saturday and Sunday. These markets continue to be the lifeblood of our local crafters and artisans, drawing families out to enjoy the best of what Potch ingenuity has to offer.
On Sunday, our team kept the momentum going by stopping at the Van Rooy Foodmarket. We brought our cameras along to give everyone a visual walkthrough of the floor, showcasing the exceptional local produce, artisanal treats, and distinct community vibe that makes this market a staple weekend stop.
June 1: Home Refresh Concepts at Build it
On Monday, our focus shifted toward home improvement and DIY inspiration. If you are looking for a quick, highly effective way to give your kitchen or bathroom a crisp, fresh new look before winter truly settles in, you don't necessarily have to plan a massive, dusty renovation.
We popped into Build it Potchefstroom to take a close look at their newly arrived range of premium taps, modern showerheads, and elegant towel rings. Whether you are mid-build, tackling essential plumbing repairs, or simply looking to execute a stylish aesthetic makeover, their organized displays offer something for every taste. Check out our latest video clip to see the full range on the floor!
June 1: Walk the Hallways of History at the Potchefstroom Museum
Later that afternoon, we took a step back in time with a visit to the Potchefstroom Museum, located at the corner of Sol Plaatje Avenue and Wolmarans Street.
If you want to truly understand the roots of our town, explore old world-changing events, or discover local art exhibitions like the ongoing "FRAGMENTE" showcase, booking an official guided tour is a must. We had the privilege of chatting with the museum's team about the immense value of keeping our local history alive for the next generation.

June 2: Taking Back Our Streets with the AfriForum Buurtspan
Tuesday brought an inspiring story of civic pride and active community action. The Go-To Guy met up with Alta Pretorius from AfriForum to unpack the details of their brand-new "Buurtspan" (Neighborhood Team) initiative.
This isn't just a temporary clean-up project; it is a dedicated, structured movement aimed at completely cleaning up, maintaining, and taking back our environment. Whether it is a quiet residential suburban street or a busy commercial sector in the CBD, the Buurtspan is geared up and ready to clear out overgrowth, remove refuse, and restore pride to our public spaces.

June 3: Groundbreaking Pediatric Heart Research with Prof. Ruan Kruger
On Wednesday, we published a highly important, professional journalistic feature highlighting a medical milestone unfolding right here on our doorstep. We had the absolute privilege of discussing global cardiovascular health with Professor Ruan Kruger (PhD ISHF FESC).
Professor Kruger is a globally acclaimed cardiovascular scientist, a Research Professor at HART (NWU), Executive Chief of SA Heart, and the President of CHCAfrica. Under his visionary guidance, CHCAfrica is currently executing a monumental, groundbreaking medical project across South Africa.
The Mission: The team is actively screening and measuring the blood pressure of children between the ages of 5 and 18.
The Goal: They are building the single largest and most comprehensive pediatric cardiovascular database in the sub-Saharan African region. This critical data will be used to develop precise, region-specific blood pressure guidelines (nomograms) to help medical professionals combat and prevent early-onset hypertension in African youth.

June 5: The Architectural Marvel of MooiRivier Mall
Friday took us to a landmark that we often take for granted, but one that remains a true marvel of design and retail convenience: the MooiRivier Mall.
As part of a brilliant video segment produced by our creator, Pieter Conradie, we took a deep look at what makes this shopping center so iconic.
Did you know that it is the only shopping mall in South Africa built entirely over a natural, free-flowing river? The striking, hydro-powered water wheel turning right above the Mooi River makes it an instant visual attraction.
It’s no surprise that the mall has been crowned a "Best of Potch" winner three times. The raw stats behind its daily operations are staggering:
The Reach: Welcoming an average of 507,000 visitors per month.
The Variety: Boasting 94 stores neatly categorized into 11 distinct lifestyle and retail sectors.
The Infrastructure: Offering 1,031 upgraded parking spaces that allow you to pay effortlessly with your bank card at the exit gates.
Future Proof: Fully prepared for modern utility challenges with an integrated 2.2 kW solar power grid and a massive 150 kL backup water storage system.
June 5: Cold Courage for a Vital Cause – Motor Neuron Disease Awareness
Also on Friday, we highlighted an act of serious bravery and community spirit. On Sunday, June 7th, local advocates Carine and Joanita officially took on the grueling #ColdCourageChallenge.
The duo submerged themselves into a freezing ice bath for 42 intense seconds to raise awareness and vital funds for those living with Motor Neuron Disease (MND).
Specialized MND medical and mobility equipment is prohibitively expensive, and local families desperately need our collective support.
Digital Donations: You can still make a direct, secure financial contribution by clicking their official link: MND South Africa Cold Courage.
Physical Goods Needed: The team is actively collecting physical items to aid in daily patient care, including second-hand mobility equipment (wheelchairs, walking frames) and adult diapers/nappies.
Potchefstroom Drop-Off Points: You can deliver physical items directly to either Sage Pilates Potchefstroom Studio or Joanita Smit Biokineticist. Let’s wrap our arms around these families and show what Potch solidarity looks like!
June 6: Non-Stop Movement at MBT Petroleum
Saturday was all about the transport grids and roadside logistics. We swung by MBT Petroleum to showcase why this facility has become the ultimate pit stop keeping local drivers and long-haul truckers moving.
It offers a complete, secure environment featuring a dedicated Truck Stop, an immaculate and safe bathroom facility, and the 24-hour Buzz Café for that late-night caffeine or snack run.
The big news on the floor this week is the official opening of their brand-new, on-site Galito's outlet! Whether you are embarking on a cross-country haul or simply need a quick, delicious flame-grilled meal on your daily commute, MBT Petroleum keeps you fueled up and moving smoothly.

June 6: Everyday Luxury and Fresh Fragrances at Potch Haus
We wrapped up our weekend field coverage with a healthy dose of interior design inspiration at Potch Haus, located at 67 Retief Street.
Potch Haus has firmly established itself as the premier destination for anyone passionate about high-end interiors and sophisticated spaces. With incredible new stock arriving on the floor constantly, their showroom is filled with magnificent Turkish carpets, elegant coffee tables, custom makeup stations, robust patio sets, and luxury office chairs.
The New Addition: They have officially expanded their luxury offerings to include an elite range of designer fragrances for both men and women, the ultimate personal treat or high-end gift.
Who it is for: It is a goldmine for professional interior architects source-hunting for statement pieces, guesthouse owners executing a room refresh, or anyone wanting to add a touch of everyday luxury to their home. They are open Monday through Saturday, so make sure to pop in and find your next favorite piece!

Our Eyes in the Field: Ikageng
June 1: Stars, Stunts, and Spinning at Ikageng Stadium
Over in Ikageng, the atmosphere on Sunday was completely electric as the community descended upon the stadium for the highly anticipated Potchefstroom Celebrity Soccer Tournament & Umdlalo Wama Riders!
It was an absolute festival of culture, sportsmanship, and raw entertainment. The crowd was treated to a spectacular blend of clinical, fast-paced football matches on the pitch, punctuated by jaw-dropping, high-adrenaline bicycle stunts and tire-smoking precision from the local car spinning crews.
The competitive spirit was fierce, and we are thrilled to announce the final standings:
🏆 Champions: Promosa Media FC (who put on an absolute clinic to lift the cup!)
🥈 Runners-up: Kasi Media FC
🥉 3rd Place: Youth Courage ASCF
4th Place: Mshaya Media FC
A massive, resounding shoutout to aQuellé, the Katlego Mhlanzi Foundation, and the incredible crowd who brought the ultimate "gees" to the stands. Head over to our video album to see if our cameras caught you in the middle of the action!
Final Thoughts
