In the realm of animal welfare, stories of survival often highlight the medical miracles performed in clinics, but some stories start long before a veterinarian is even reached. Such is the case of Wit Voet, a resilient canine whose journey toward recovery began with a 7.4-kilometer walk of pure desperation and devotion. This narrative, unfolding at PAWS Haven (the Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society), underscores the profound bond between humans and their animals, even in the face of extreme hardship.

A 7.4-Kilometer Journey of Devotion
The story of Wit Voet gained national attention when his owner, Ari Leshomo, arrived at the Miederpark-based sanctuary after traveling nearly seven and a half kilometers on foot from Extension 11, Ikageng. Ari was not alone; he was carrying his best friend, Wit Voet, inside a box.
Wit Voet had been the victim of a devastating accident, having been run over by a vehicle. The impact left him with severe injuries, most notably a broken left back leg and significant trauma to his other rear limb. Despite the excruciating pain, the dog remained a fighter, and his owner refused to let financial barriers dictate the end of his life. Lacking the funds for transport or private medical care, Ari chose the only path available: he carried his friend the entire distance to ensure he reached the specialized care available at the PAWS clinic.

The Path to Recovery at PAWS Haven
Upon their arrival, the medical team at PAWS Haven, including staff like Dr. Mabote and AHT Barbie, stepped in to stabilize Wit Voet. However, treating such complex orthopedic injuries requires resources beyond the standard operations of a non-profit shelter. To give Wit Voet a chance to walk again, the organization launched a specialized BackaBuddy campaign to fund several critical stages of his rehabilitation:
Diagnostic Imaging: Comprehensive X-rays to assess the full extent of the bone damage.
Orthopedic Surgery: Necessary procedures to set and repair the fractured leg.
Extended Medical Care: Pain management medication and professional aftercare.
Physical Rehabilitation: A structured recovery plan to restore mobility to his back legs.
As of late February 2026, the community has begun to rally, with significant donations already being recorded to help cover these mounting costs.
One Hop at a Time: Surgery and Recovery
After a successful fundraising campaign, PAWS Haven is thrilled to report that Wit Voet has officially made it through his critical surgery. His resilience has stunned the medical team; shortly after the procedure, he was already up and moving. While he is not quite walking with a full stride yet, he has mastered a "sweet little hop" that signals his determination to heal.
For a dog that arrived in a box, unable to support his own weight, standing on his own paws represents a monumental victory. This milestone is the culmination of medical expertise and a community that refused to let his story end in a roadside accident.

Miracles in Motion: Rosie’s First Steps
Wit Voet’s recovery is being aided by a very special companion. He has found a "nurse" and a friend in Rosie, another brave resident who is overcoming her own trauma. Rosie was left behind after a hit-and-run accident with both her front legs broken. Today, she is standing and walking, proof that love and specialized care can mend even the most severe injuries.
The two little survivors have become inseparable, described by staff as "two peas in a pod." They rest and heal together, providing each other with the courage needed to face the long road of rehabilitation ahead. While their steps may not be perfect or fast yet, every movement is a celebrated miracle. Rosie and Wit Voet stand as living proof that love heals, and that with the right care, even the most broken spirits can find their footing again.

A Sanctuary Driven by Community and Compassion
The mission of PAWS Haven, to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome, is embodied in these cases. The organization's role as a community medical resource is vital, relying on a dedicated team led by Manager Ian and supported by K9 staff like Sam and Daniel.
The stories of Wit Voet and Rosie serve as powerful reminders that love is often measured in miles and that no animal should be left behind because of a lack of means. As Wit Voet continues his fight and Rosie takes her first brave steps, they do so with the support of a community that recognizes the value of every wagging tail.
