The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) extended its Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme to the JB Marks Local Municipality on 7 November. The programme aims to stimulate local economic activity, support small enterprises, and expand community development initiatives across the province.

Sod-Turning Ceremony for Dunlop Wheel and Alignment Project
The programme’s activities included a sod-turning ceremony for the Dunlop Wheel and Alignment Project in Potchefstroom.
The event was attended by:
Premier of the North West Province, Lazarus Mokgosi
MEC for DEDECT, Bitsa Lenkopane
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Local Economic Development, Malverine Davis
The project is expected to serve as a catalyst for township economic activity and job creation. Once completed, the site will be developed into a market trading hub designed to provide a safe, formalised space for hawkers and small business owners. This hub will offer improved trading conditions and contribute to long-term economic participation in the area.
Support for Inclusive Growth and Enterprise Development
During the event, Premier Mokgosi acknowledged the programme’s role in promoting inclusive growth and strengthening local economies. He highlighted that Thuntsha Lerole represents the provincial government’s commitment to delivering practical, community-centred solutions.
DEDECT, in partnership with Absa Bank, recently trained 58 informal traders in business and financial management through the department’s Integrated Economic Development Services (IEDS) Unit. Participants who completed the training will receive start-up resources and continued mentorship to help establish sustainable businesses.
MEC Lenkopane emphasised the department’s focus on ensuring that economic programmes translate into meaningful opportunities, especially for youth and women.

Environmental Empowerment and Green Economy Initiatives
As part of DEDECT’s environmental focus, out-of-school youth environmental clubs will take part in cleanup activities and will be encouraged to form recycling cooperatives. These cooperatives will fall under DEDECT’s “Matlakala ke Zaka” campaign, an initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and circular economy opportunities.
The campaign specifically supports women recyclers and green entrepreneurs, encouraging long-term participation in waste-management and environmental enterprises.
Programme Impact and Future Outlook
The activities undertaken through the Thuntsha Lerole Programme demonstrate efforts to accelerate service delivery, stimulate business development, and support community empowerment within JB Marks Municipality.
Through partnerships with local government, the private sector, and community stakeholders, DEDECT aims to expand livelihood opportunities while building a more inclusive and environmentally sustainable provincial economy.

Final Thoughts
The rollout of the Thuntsha Lerole Accelerated Service Delivery Programme in JB Marks Local Municipality reflects a coordinated approach to economic development. By combining infrastructure upgrades, business support, environmental initiatives, and training programmes, the North West
Provincial Government continues to strengthen its commitment to local growth, entrepreneurship, and service delivery improvement.
