The opening round of the Varsity Women’s Football tournament saw the University of Johannesburg (UJ) make a strong statement, sweeping aside North-West University (NWU) with a commanding 4–0 victory. The match, played on 5 September, set the tone for UJ’s campaign as the defending champions stamped their authority early.

Early Pressure Pays Off
UJ wasted no time asserting dominance, controlling possession and pinning NWU back from the first whistle. The breakthrough came in the 7th minute when Sbongakonke Mzobe rifled home a well-placed effort into the top corner, setting the Orange Army on their way.
Mofolo’s Hat-Trick Heroics
The star of the afternoon was unquestionably Thato Mofolo, who delivered a clinical performance in front of goal. She struck three times, completing her hat-trick before being substituted in the second half by coach Nthabeleng Modiko, who opted to preserve key players for upcoming fixtures.
Mofolo’s movement and finishing proved too much for NWU’s defence, and her contribution highlighted the depth and quality within UJ’s squad.

NWU Under Pressure
For NWU, goalkeeper Mmabatho Tladi endured a busy afternoon, producing several important saves to keep the scoreline from rising even higher. Despite her efforts, UJ’s relentless attacking pressure proved decisive. With a 2–0 advantage at halftime, the hosts added two more after the break to close out a comprehensive win.
