A community medical appeal and crowdfunding campaign have been launched via BackaBuddy to assist with the private hospitalization costs of five-month-old Basson Roode. The infant is currently receiving specialized treatment in isolation within the pediatric ward at MediClinic Potchefstroom.

Basson was admitted to the facility following concurrent diagnoses of COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Initially diagnosed with hypoxic pneumonia, his condition has since stabilized and been reclassified as bronchitis. On Tuesday evening, medical staff transitioned the patient from standard oxygen therapy to a high-flow oxygen machine to better support his respiration and assist his lung recovery.
Out-of-Pocket Expenditure and Outstanding Liabilities
Because the family does not currently have active medical aid coverage, all healthcare costs incurred at the private facility must be paid out of pocket. Due to the age of the patient and the severity of his respiratory symptoms, a public healthcare facility was not considered a viable option for his immediate stabilization.
The cumulative financial obligations required to sustain his hospital treatment and ward stay through Friday are substantial:
Initial Deposit: The family has already paid R22,000 toward the account since Monday.
Outstanding Hospital Balance: An additional R67,000 is required to cover the remaining hospital account for the week.
Professional External Fees: Independent fees for the attending pediatrician and physiotherapist are billed separately and are not included in the primary hospital account.
Fundraising Targets and Institutional Payment Channels
The overall fundraising goal has been set at R100,000 to settle the outstanding hospital balance and cover the external specialists' professional fees.
For verification and transparency, the public can make direct financial contributions to the hospital's banking channel using the patient's dedicated account reference, or contribute through the verified BackaBuddy portal:
