Residents and businesses across southern Potchefstroom are experiencing a major water interruption today, Wednesday, 12 November 2025, after a pipe burst along Louis le Grange Street near the Waste Transfer Station. The JB Marks Local Municipality has confirmed the incident and deployed its technical team to assess the damage and begin repair operations as quickly as possible.

Details of the Incident:
Water supply was initially disrupted earlier this morning around 08:00, following excavation work related to the installation of a new sewer line in the same area. As the situation developed, the main water supply was shut off to reduce pressure and prevent further leakage. By midday, municipal teams had confirmed a major pipe burst, causing extensive water outages across several residential and industrial zones.
According to a municipal Public Notice issued by the Communication Unit of JB Marks Local Municipality, the affected areas include:
Industrial Area
Parts of Miederpark
Mooibank Plot vicinity
Potchefstroom Hospital
Portions of the Central Business District (CBD)
These zones are connected to the Ventersdorp Reservoir, which supplies much of the southern region of Potchefstroom.

Community and Municipal Updates:
Ward 7 Councillor André Klopper reported that the damaged pipe was discovered during trenching for the sewer line project. He advised residents to store water in containers while limited pressure remains, as the main valve has been closed to relieve pressure and allow for safe excavation.
The JB Marks Municipality stated that their technical team is currently inspecting the extent of the damage and sourcing appropriate replacement materials. At this stage, there is no confirmed timeline for the restoration of water supply, as the municipality must first identify the correct pipe size and ensure the required fittings are available.
Municipal Statement and Apology:
In an official communication, the JB Marks Municipality expressed regret for the disruption, saying: “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused while we work to resolve the matter. Our technical team is assessing the damage and will commence with repairs as soon as possible.”
Municipal officials have emphasised that safety remains a priority and that all repair work will be carried out with caution to prevent further damage or flooding.
Way Forward:
Residents are urged to use stored water sparingly and remain patient as the municipality works to restore supply. Updates will be provided throughout the day as progress is made on-site.
The JB Marks Municipality reaffirmed its commitment to responsive service delivery and infrastructure maintenance, thanking residents for their cooperation during this unplanned emergency repair.
