Weekly Overview of Potch Incidents: Accidents, Fires, and Community Response 30 July 2025

Between 22 and 30 July 2025, Potchefstroom witnessed a range of events affecting public safety and awareness. These included road incidents, attempted crimes, fire prevention operations, public warnings, and scam alerts. The following summary provides a neutral overview of notable occurrences based on verified information received from Cachet Park CID NPC Potchefstroom, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and related emergency and community safety services.

22 July: Attempted Robbery and Community Safety Appeal


An attempted street robbery occurred near Mooirivier Junction at approximately 20:30. Cachet Park Officers responded promptly following a tip-off from a nearby security officer. Two suspects were apprehended at SENWES Cricket Park and were found in possession of a knife and housebreaking tools. However, the complainants had left the scene before law enforcement could gather statements.


Community safety officials reminded the public not to leave the scene of a crime and to ensure an official case is opened with SAPS to enable further investigation and justice.


24–29 July: Fire Risk Updates and Controlled Operations


  • Fire Danger Index (FDI):

    • 24 July: Yellow (Moderate) – Temperatures between 4°C–21°C, with gust wind speeds of 21 km/h.

    • 26–27 July: Yellow (Moderate) – Gusts up to 33 km/h expected on Sunday.

    • 28 July: Yellow – Wind gusts peaked at 25 km/h with lows of 0°C.

    • 29 July: Yellow – Low temperatures and mild gusts (17 km/h) persisted.


  • Firebreak Operations (29 July):


    NWU Emergency Services initiated firebreaks in the Railway Reserve between West Campus and Main Campus. The operation took place between 16:00 and 20:00. Stakeholders were advised to keep windows closed due to potential smoke drift.

25 July: Scam Reports and Road Hazard Warning


  • Scam Activity:

    SAPS confirmed 90 scam reports over the past week in Potchefstroom. Most incidents originated from social media platforms. Residents were urged to treat unusually good offers with caution and avoid sharing personal or banking information.


  • Road Hazard – Walter Sisulu Lane:

    A large pothole was reported on Walter Sisulu Avenue. Motorists were urged to reduce speed and use alternative routes to avoid potential damage.


  • Attempted Car Door Tampering:

    An incident involving attempted unauthorized access to a vehicle occurred behind the Haval dealership. The vehicle’s faulty locking mechanism enabled a suspect to forcibly open the passenger door. No injuries were reported, and the suspect fled the scene.


28–29 July: Vehicle Theft Warning and Marketplace Fraud


  • Theft of Toyota Hilux Vehicles:

    Residents were cautioned about an increase in vehicle theft, particularly targeting Toyota Hilux models (2.8 GD6). Key tips included locking vehicles, avoiding visible valuables, installing tracking systems, and parking in well-lit or secure areas. The SAPS emphasized immediate reporting and documentation in the event of a theft.


  • Marketplace Scam Alert:

    An increase in fraudulent listings on online platforms was reported. Potential buyers were advised not to send deposits for high-value items and to verify sellers before completing transactions.

30 July: Nelson Mandela Drive Accident


A vehicle accident occurred on Nelson Mandela Drive near the Mooirivier Mall entrance, heading in the Klerksdorp direction. One lane was temporarily obstructed but reopened within an hour. No critical injuries were reported.
