Welding is the backbone of many industries in Potchefstroom, from construction and farming to automotive and DIY projects. Choosing the right welding method can make the difference between a strong, clean job and a weak join that won’t last .
Let’s break down the three most common methods: MIG, TIG, and Stick welding.

🔧 MIG Welding (Metal Inert Gas)
⚙️ What it is: Uses a wire that automatically feeds through the welding gun, making it quick and easy.💡 Best for: Beginners, automotive work, and projects that need speed.
✅ Pros: Fast, easy to learn, great for thin metals.
⚠️ Cons: Not ideal outdoors because wind can affect the shielding gas.
👉 Think of MIG welding as the “all-rounder”, perfect for workshops where time is money.
✨ TIG Welding (Tungsten Inert Gas)
⚙️ What it is: Uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with a separate filler rod. It gives you very precise control.
💡 Best for: Stainless steel, aluminium, and projects needing neat, professional finishes.
✅ Pros: Produces clean, strong welds with no spatter.
⚠️ Cons: Slower, requires more skill, and needs both hands.
👉 TIG is the “perfectionist’s choice”, excellent for detail work and jobs where looks matter.
⚡ Stick Welding (Shielded Metal Arc)
⚙️ What it is: Uses an electrode (the “stick”) coated in flux. The flux creates its own gas shield when it burns.
💡 Best for: Outdoor work, heavy steel structures, and farming equipment repairs.
✅ Pros: Works well on rusty or dirty metals, no shielding gas needed.
⚠️ Cons: More spatter, less neat compared to MIG or TIG.
👉 Stick welding is the “farm favourite”, tough, practical, and reliable for outdoor conditions in SA.
Each method has its place:
🔧 MIG for speed and ease.
✨ TIG for precision and quality.
⚡ Stick for durability in tough conditions.
